Will be interesting to see how they're compared to environmental groups who did the same and who mainly showed their faces. Were anti terror laws used against them in the end? Weren't there calls by certain sections on the right to run them over?

Let's wait and see.

The possibility of abuse might well persuade me to wear a mask were I to go on a protest, but I still come back to the principle that one shouldn't be arrested for wearing a mask but should be for committing an offence, whether with or without a mask.

Having said that, I seem to be ploughing a lone furrow on this issue on TWTD, as I often seem to be.

I’m with you on this one.

I don’t think a face covering should mean arrest.

Ironically, reform would likely ban face coverings...

Actually socialism is driving the population increase. Capitalism can survive without it - as was the UK model pretty much up to the Blair years - the idea being the growth comes from 1) making us individually better off (until we printed billions of QE) 2) it’s a global economy. Though I accept the Tories most likely aimed to also keep wages down by creating such an unlimited labour pool (and no doubt the same for Reform, look at the donators).

What CAN’T survive without significant population growth is the state pension, which requires ever more tax payers to cover an increasing number of retirees. It’s the ultimate Ponzi scheme.

Other than that I avoided this thread as it’s another that just turned into another one of personal attacks and arguing!*

*Edit - so much so, I forgot what the thread was about!!

Not my contributions, guv.

But I agree with your general point, and it is why I often give up on threads on which there are interesting and valid things to debate.

Perhaps the moral of this and other threads is "Don't bear grudges.".

Just as they seem to have an issue with free speech, given their suspension of Tim Montgomerie and their banning of journalists.

I guess you haven't seen the vile abuse, harrassment, defamation, misrepresentation etc by posters other than Benters then.

He's no angel, and holds some views that I totally disagree with, but he's one of a band on here that unlike those others, have demonstrated care and compassion on an individual basis in practice, including by PM. So whilst I usually agree with you, I'm afraid I don't on this.

You are 100% correct on this Ryorry.

Agree to disagree. He’s been extremely nasty to me, repeatedly over the years - even without the political points. But I’ll leave it there.

Given they were all masked, all in black and are a self identified army, could a case be made for this being their uniform, which would be explicitly banned under the UK Public Order Act 1936? Which was passed in response to uniformed fascists on our streets coincidentally enough!

That would turn on an interpretation of the Act in this particular case but such legislation has been used in the recent past.

But in many ways, it merely emphasises the point that I am making, namely, that there are already provisions on the statute book that can be used without creating more offences.

And for what it is worth, if I were non-White I think I would find more intimidating a far right gathering with Union Jacks, however they were dressed, but once again there are offences on the statute book to cover intimidation such as the offence of causing harm, alarm or distress under section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986.

Cheers DJR. It’s handy having people around here who understand Legalese.
