| Games against the big six 13:33 - Sep 5 with 2003 views | AG26 | I don't agree with people saying we should just write off these games against big six teams and that it's just a free hit. Nearly a third of our games over the course of the season will be against big six sides. Puts a lot of pressure on us to beat the rest if we lose every single one of them. Two seasons ago we beat Chelsea at home and Tottenham away, drew against Chelsea away and Man Utd at home. I'm obviously not saying we should be looking to win every time, but taking points off some of them should definitely be achievable. No reason why we can't get results against these sides with a much better team on paper than 2024/25. | | | | |
| Games against the big six on 11:10 - Sep 6 with 238 views | _CliveBaker_ | I don’t think anyone is writing them off, we’re putting out a full strength side and trying to win them, as we should be doing. Not really sure what ‘looking to win them’ means, we’re certainly trying to win them, but need to be realistic about the likelihood against sides with 3 x £100m+ players. It’s not a stretch to think they aren’t the games that will dictate our season. Nobody earmarks Man United away and Liverpool as where our points are most likely to come from. Worth nothing Sunderland lost both of those respective fixtures last season, without scoring a goal, and finished 7th. | | | |

| Games against the big six on 08:45 - Sep 6 by Adams | It's especially silly when both Man U and Liverpool look very vulnerable themselves. It was a great time to play them, and I went into both games thinking we could really hurt them if we kept it tight. I expected us to give them both real tough games, but thought they probably would edge it with the talent they have up front. You would think, from reading on this forum, we were up against Ferguson's and Klopp's teams. |
The irritating thing about the Utd game is that two slices of bad luck turned that game. We certainly weren’t playing there like a side who had gone into that game writing it off.

I don't agree with this at all. Yes, the slip was unfortunate, but people have created a story where the handball turned the game. It didn't. Fans are just using it as an excuse. We were all over the place from the start of the second half. They got behind our defence 4 times in 15 minutes, hit the bar and goal line, consistently running at our defence, and the handball came from pressure we didn't/couldnt deal with properly. The hammering was coming even if they ruled that goal out. I watched the game with a Man U fan, and we could both see what was happening. We were far too open and didn't adapt to the change. O'Neil was far too slow to react to it all. I'm not sure what he was thinking to be honest.

The game runs away from us after the handball situation. We’re trying to get through a tough spell, and a blatant handball gets over-ruled by a bizarrre rule designed to punish the defending team. It’s a kick in the balls to the team and understandable that their concentration goes, If United go 2-1 up in “orthodox” fashion, they may have gone on to win but the penalty situation likely doesn’t happen.
| Games against the big six on 13:17 - Sep 6 with 154 views | jayessess | Less that these games are a write off, more that this early in the season they're basically impossible to use as a benchmark. We could be a mid-table team and still lose these games, we could be absolute relegation fodder and still nick a point or three out of them. All three games have been so wildly different in terms of the opposition and our performance, difficult to determine if we're good bad or indifferent really. That is a complete misreading of the game. The momentum of the game shifted against us. Check the detailed stats if you don't believe me. The first half was ours, and we should have gone in ahead - and by more than 1 goal. The slip by Nunez and resulting goal tipped the game away from us, but we didn't - at that point - drop our heads. Without the slip, the first half xG would have been 0.37 to 1.03. xGOT was 0.58 to 1.5. There had been limited threat on our goal. Yes, ManU came out fast in the 2nd half, but do you really not think a halftime at 1:1 rather than 1:0 down makes a difference to their confidence (and the crowd/atmosphere)? Then, to top all of that we suffer perceived injustice that results in conceding a goal. Anyone who understands the game and human nature will understand the impact of that. Should we have gone to pieces after that? No. But it's understandable. That game 100% defines fine margins. | | | |

I guess he was thinking it is early in the season, im learning about the players and the opposition as it is in late Aug. The ream had got into a good position first half, this is more or less my best team right now and they have to find the strength to overcome challenges teams like this will create in games, that is development and progress. If there was a wand available probably he would have waved it.

You misunderstood my post. I was very clearly talking about the handball incident. We had lost control of the game before that happened. Only Ipswich fans who are biased think it was fine margins. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It's not about finding the strength to overcome challenges. The problem was tactical. He should have seen that the game was going away from us, and we had lost all control and weren't capable of hanging on. I think people should go back and watch the 15 minutes after halftime again. They were consistently getting behind us and running at our defence. Missed a sitter as well. There were so many warning signs, and it was obvious we were going to be hammered unless he changed something. Unfortunately, he waited until we were 4-1 down to do anything. The biggest false narrative about that United game is that the handball changed everything, it really didn’t, the onslaught had already begun.
