I don't agree with people saying we should just write off these games against big six teams and that it's just a free hit.

Nearly a third of our games over the course of the season will be against big six sides. Puts a lot of pressure on us to beat the rest if we lose every single one of them.

Two seasons ago we beat Chelsea at home and Tottenham away, drew against Chelsea away and Man Utd at home.

I'm obviously not saying we should be looking to win every time, but taking points off some of them should definitely be achievable.

No reason why we can't get results against these sides with a much better team on paper than 2024/25.

Remind me where ManU and Spurs finished that season?

And who said they are writing off games against the top teams? They just won't be what defines our season, and points from those games are a bonus. Results from games like we have over the next 3 will define our season. 4-5 points off the next 3 will tell us a lot.

Performance and results in the next league two league games will give us a bit more of an insight in how different we really are this season to the last campaign imo

Not saying it has to be two games, two wins but competitive over 90 minutes firstly and then hopefully 3 or more points will put us in a good position going into international break.

Has anyone said that the matches against Man U or Liverpool are fee hits etc?

They aren’t free hits, but it isn’t against the bigger clubs that will determine our season.

A couple of season as ago - we beat Chelsea but those three points meant very little when compared to the fact that we lost against Southampton, Wolves and other smaller PL clubs.

I called it a free hit, for me Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal are the free hits, or we can change that to nothing to lose games, they are simply so strong now, it doesn't mean we don't care or try not to take any points, but newly promoted sides are just so far off those top three sides now, they have crazy quality in depth and in every position..

As mentioned above, looking at sunderland games last year

they beat a chelsea side who were a bit odd last year

yet there didn't beat Utd, liverpool, man city or arsenal

They did get some draws though, so that's where we need to do slightly better

I don't think anyone wants us to write them off. People are just being realistic and not catastrophising when we lose them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool noticed how our defence crumbled to vigorous Man Utd attacking at the start of the second half, and started the game the same way, knowing that we've got a massive vulnerability there. Let's hope that gets fixed soon.

People are just being realistic. Liverpool had 3 players who cost over £100m, however last season with all the new players they struggled to gel. You can see they have a better understanding at the moment.
Town will get there, it takes some of the most expensive footballers ever time to get some understanding.
Most fans also understand when the season starts you get strange results. Too many fans think football is the same as a PlayStation football game - its not.

50% of fans wrote off Villa last season after the first 4 games look where they ended up.

Nobody is looking at it as 'who cares if we lose' we just understand that trying to compete with top 6 will take time.

Is anyone saying we should write them off. I think most are saying we shouldn't be judging the team in these and that these aren't the ones that will dictate our success.

We still need to go for the points of course. But not turn on the team, manager etc when we don't win.

They might.

Team tries to attack = revolutionary tactic that needs to be copied ....

Both assists were brilliant. The defence did not crumble.

The problem is that we carry the damaged morale and shattered confidence from big 6 games into games we need to win. Everything is interconnected.

I think all our 3pm Saturday games are must win, otherwise we are down again. The Sky games we are just cannon fodder for the big 6.

So far we are on track.

I think people only say it is a free hit because the expectation level is so low. So anything gained is a bonus. Obviously that is a fan attitude rather than a team attitude. The team will be going into them with ambition and high hopes, hopefully. More so than us fans who have been scarred with defeats against the big teams for many years.

Neither do I. Facts suggest we are rather more likely to lose them than win them, but combined they come to 36 points that are being played for. Happy just to be content to throw them away? Any points gained from these would ease the pressure a bit ( or more ), on the games that would appear more winnable, on paper at least. No free hits in the PL, when you're aiming just to stay up.

This league should be looked at in three sections top, middle, bottom split it in three we need to be aiming for 17th place.

That way there’s no need for hissy fits and panic anything above a 17th place finish is great under 17th place it’s balls.

End of.

It's especially silly when both Man U and Liverpool look very vulnerable themselves. It was a great time to play them, and I went into both games thinking we could really hurt them if we kept it tight. I expected us to give them both real tough games, but thought they probably would edge it with the talent they have up front.

You would think, from reading on this forum, we were up against Ferguson's and Klopp's teams.

There is no way we write them off, it is more that this is not where we would reasonably expect to gather many/any points. However- i can’t imagine manager and coaches writing them off and players wont, the reality on the day in the game is a different matter.

I would expect they are serious development games in most cases, learning at close quarters the differences in your own game and theirs, from the manager and coaching approach on the sidelines, to the players, the speed they pass, hit, and technical ability to control the ball, the movement in the final third, the defensive approach of midfield and defensive working to minimise your attacking efforts.

Lots to observe first hand then work to improve in our game for the next free hit (i mean important game).

The notion of ‘big 6’ in itself is non sensical. Arsenal, City, Liverpool and Chelsea maybe the standout teams. But you then can’t just add teams like United and Spurs to that catagory. It’ll be much harder to take points off Bournemouth that it will be Spurs for example. Can then add Newcastle, Brighton and maybe Leeds to that list.

Yes, given our results against Chelsea and Spurs last time round, assuming Spurs count as big six (lol), we did better against them than the other teams, surely?

And Hull have shown that these teams are beatable. Well, as long as you prioritise spending money on a top keeper and have a strong defence......

I think you’re got yourself a bit muddled. There’s going to be a spectrum of views but in the last two games we’ve been humbled very quickly. And maybe that’s down to the window meaning we got Flemming in a bit late, and had hopes of getting someone better in or whatever.

However, for all the talk of finishing well clear of the bottom three we’ve got to improve and integrate fairly rapidly. Liverpool spent 80 mins on cruise control because they punished so much so quickly and you can see both sides of that.

Likewise, United have only added quality to a high finishing team and exploited our head loss and the officials’ bias and incompetence to roundly humiliate us at times. It’s going to be a long season and remaining focused on survival should be at the forefront of everyone’s minds until it looks certain. That could well be the last day after all.
