A lot less open space in the middle of the pitch than our games. It’s a true flat back 5 as well, the 3 CBs are than close together are going to win a lot of balls that come their way. I just don’t see what they are going to do when they concede first goal at this level though lol. Villa still look quite threatening. [Post edited 5 Sep 17:53]

| Hull watch on 20:04 - Sep 5 by Adams | Of course Hull will. If they go behind, they will struggle as they don't have the quality. No one is claiming their tactics are magical and guarantee results. They are, however, doing what all promoted teams have to do against the top clubs: be hard to play against. We should have been closer to Hull's tactics than the tactics we have used. Personally, I would rather have an extra midfielder than 5 at the back, but we should have been much deeper. We didn't stand a chance with the tactics we used. |
Agree far too easy to get in behind.

| Hull watch on 20:01 - Sep 5 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | But they only have to pick up another 33 or so points over 35 games, so if they can do it in enough of them they’ll give themselves a chance. I think being a hard side to beat is probably the most important thing for a promoted side tbh. If we can get 45 points beating a loads of mid table and lower half teams then great, that will be more fun. Guess we will find out soon enough, but let’s remember some of these sides have squads streets ahead of us at the moment and we will have to deal with what comes off the bench in many of these winnable games. If they get through the next few games in same position id begin to agree but i do think theyve been lucky to face two sides who are having a torrid start when it comes to scoring. | |

| Hull watch on 19:54 - Sep 5 by Tonytown | They look compact, hard to play through and have talent out wide on both sides with a beast of a centre forward. They would beat us if we played them next week. |
That's the spirit! | |

| Hull watch on 19:43 - Sep 5 by FrimleyBlue | So far hulls goes have been two set pieces and a hoof from an opponents corner If thats your outlay whilst opponents are banging on the door to your goal its not going to end well over the season. |
Worked for them last season though didn't it? Something like 19th in the expected points table, got promoted. It always catches up with you except when it doesnt

| Hull watch on 20:17 - Sep 5 with 678 views | TheBoyBlue | It's a small sample size to judge from. I've been impressed with Hull's start. They caught Man Utd cold on the first day, were perhaps fortunate to play Coventry next and of course the confidence is carried over. Momentum could take them quite far, but as you say it will be interesting how they respond when they go behind. | |

They’ll probably lose 8-10 games in a row at some point this season but if they get 25% of the survival points tally required in first 5-6 games they’ll have a great chance. An underrated part of Sunderland (and to same extent Leeds) success last season was not spending much, if any time in the bottom 4 or 5 or looking over their shoulder. When your cut adrift in winter, it’s likely not going to end well, which is why are next 3 are big for us.

| Hull watch on 20:19 - Sep 5 with 661 views | Blue_Uprising | I’m confused a bit because when last in the prem general consensus was that we were naive and didn’t recognise the step up (I was shocked at the gap) Last year the shift to a much more solid looking town was lauded as preparing us more for the prem at a sacrifice of attacking open play When GON was appointed the silver lining was moving to pragmatic fc when needed I think maybe the very exciting transfer window since has maybe shifted the overton window a bit. We should maybe not yet get too ahead of the view that grubby cup style football does not have to be a decent part of our dna this season. If we really impress in the next few games facing teams more likely to be in our mini league I will be both delighted and humble. lol | | | |
| Hull watch on 20:20 - Sep 5 with 662 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | Someone said to me that Hull would translate best to the PL out of the promoted teams because of their style. I almost laughed given their squad, and how they seemed to limp into promotion. However, that’s looking very much to be the case thus far. You have to give credit to their manage in organising them so well, I picked Ajayi in my FF team / he’s been a good acquisition. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Hull watch on 19:38 - Sep 5 by pointofblue | They're fluking it. Sorry, but I'm getting slightly annoyed off with the woe is us post after post on here coupled with the fellating of Hull. Based on XP: Town 1.74 - 0.76 Sunderland Man Utd 4.56 - 2.01 Town Town 0.73 - 0.66 Liverpool Hull 1.26 - 1.81 Man Utd Coventry 1.28 - 0.73 Hull Hull 0.58 - 1.78 Hull For all of Hull's superb defending and excellent low block, our xG against is better outside of the Manchester United meltdown. Teams are taking their chances against us. They're not against Hull. I'm not saying being more solid is a bad thing. But I don't think, when looking deeper than "Oh they haven't conceded yet", Hull is necessarily the approach we should aspire to, unless we know we'll also get their fortune. |
I think xG is useful but ours yesterday proves it doesn’t always tell the true story. Liverpool were all over us, got 2 up, chilled out and kept us at arms length, we were mainly restricted to shots from outside the box. Those 10 non threatening shots from distance have added up to see us “win” on xG but the reality was we were miles away.

xG shows shots at the keeper, be it a dangerous shot that almost beats the keeper or a tame one that the keeper gleefully scoops up. Last night it was ALL of the latter.

It’s true though. Trying to go toe to toe with better teams isn’t going to work. Thankfully Liverpool were content to control the game yesterday. We could have taken a real hammering. We fell apart at United, not helped by the slip, a dreadful decision and a bit of bad luck with the deflection to Fernandes, but it was coming and GON didn’t react until it was too late. 3 in midfield and or 5 at the back against the better teams with the ability to change formation if we are still in the game near the end. It nearly worked for Cov at City today.

I thought xg were goals expected because it was deemed a goal should be scored which means long shots dont actually count as XG as the odds of a goal are are slim

It's not true that Hull "would beat us if we played them next week", just your negative opinion. "It nearly worked for Cov at City today." LOL. This Cov that so many of you are praising, are they the same Cov who are bottom with no goals and no points?

This. Xg as I understand it does not measure the speed of the shot or the position it crosses into the net just where it leaves the stickers foot. So a top corner thinderbolt gets similar xg to a dribbler to the gk feet? I believe I assume tech will advance to this point with the $350 fifa balls etc but not sure it is there yet? Assume that will change quite a few xg stats Maybe someone more in the know can advise based on prem level tech.

Exactly is. It isn't just based on shots on goal, as that was already a stat so would be pretty pointless. Whilst I appreciate Liverpool didn't push forward as much as they would have done once they had got to 2-0, if we fell apart they would have still won 5-0 or 6-0. It's a shame we didn't regroup as we did yesterday at Old Trafford as we may have got something out of the game. Or kept it much closer than we did.

What if we are trying to be more than relegation scrappers Going toe to toe with the majorty of sides in the league and not just reaching for being competitive. Brighton conceded 4 last week. Were they wrong in how they set up? They drew today against a side they want to compete with Whos to say our learnings v utd and liverpool wont help us next week Our midfield has been together for 60 minutes of football. Most important area of a pitch. Last night would have done them the world of good.

I imagine he’s talking about their game today in isolation as a promoted side against a CL club and especially away from home, it probably needs to be considered. It did nearly work today for them to be honest, they were unlucky second half. In our previous PL season we conceded 82 goals including a tone at the Ethiad and Anfield. So far this season we conceded 5 at Old Trafford and 2 in 10 mins again last night so you can see why a few alarm bells are ringing.

See my point about the Overton window shifting in relation to our transfer window. I do genuinely hope this is the case. But probably too early to tell. I guess I would naturally take the cautious approach and hope to have scraped an extra point from one of the last two games.

I know what's happened. I also think there's a lot of context missed out there. Plus I think 3 games is too early to make much of a judgement on anything, frankly.
