How do we manage to get it so wrong with goalkeepers? 09:34 - Sep 7 with 4955 viewsBacktoblue78A

Walton played almost 40 games last season, looking largely solid and had a good understanding with his defenders.
We now revert to a strategically poor replacement who doesn't instill any sense of confidence.

"Muric was not statistically the worst keeper" - he had most errors leading to a goal:

Quite an achievement considering he only played half the season. I don't know how you can gloss over that.

We were second bottom mid December 2024 when we finally dropped Muric: https://www.football365.com/pr
Palmer made far fewer mistakes. Our poor form from then onwards was not due to our GK leaking goals.

Palmer made less obvious mistakes on the eye than Muric. But the reality is he had a great debut against Villa and was then absolute turd. He had a spell of 8 games or so when it felt like literally every shot beat him.

I don't really rate Walton either. He has a real weakness of parrying shots and isn't very clever with his feet. I said we were mad to let KVO go out on loan a month or so ago and got plenty of push back on here. Hopefully Scherpen ends up being a good signing for us.

But if you've come off your line and failed to win the ball, you're not in goal to save a shot! Did you feel that ability to come-off-line was secondary after Liverpool's second and Man Utd's fifth?

Enough. Like I say, hope you lot are right and Scherpen comes good.

If he'd have saved Liverpool's second and United's fifth, then I would have said, yes, the ability to come off the line is secondary to shot stopping.

I know it's not as black and white as that and I do see the point you're making. But I still maintain that shot stopping is the most important facet of a goalkeeper, and that's why Walton is, unfortunately in my opinion, not as good as Muric or Scherpen.

Also worth remembering how poor Palmer is at set pieces.

Why is it seen as acceptable that outfield players need time to develop partnerships with other players, but Goalkeepers are expected to come in and be perfect from debut.

Lets focus on this coming out of goal.. that comes with confidence, but also comes with development of understanding his team mates, when to come, when not too etc

Kieran McKenna in the main tried to replace Walton at every opportunity. Be it Hladky, Muric or Palmer or his constant attempts to sign Rushworth.

Good god - this forum is toxic with so much criticism. It's week three - all keepers make mistakes. How about we get behind the team and players and stop being so toxic.

Going into games where it may be critical to take something away, I'm merely making the point that we can't afford any 'goalkeeping charity' if chances at the other end are few and far between.
This happy clappy approach saw us too far off the pace to recover last time round. If we can keep clean sheets we may at least force the odd draw.

It's not "happy clappy" to point out the flaws in your criticism of Scherpen. Just as it's not bedwetting on your behalf to raise concern that mistakes may lead to dropped points, which may prove costly at the end of the season.

Have a bit of patience my friend.

Out of interest, what was worse... Not saving the first goal
or Palacios being sent for a hot dog in the lead up...

"If we can keep clean sheets we may at least force the odd draw."

Why will it be so much more difficult to score against (goals conceded so far in parentheses): Palace (8), Everton (3), Fulham (7) and Forest (3) than Sunderland (3; 2 by us) and Man Utd (6; 2 by us)?

If we can keep clean sheets, I am confident we will win at least two of the next 5.
