Well if you're so smart, then tell us why that should be allowed in tbe interests of the game.... not because of some loophole or blind spot in the lawbook
Haaland didn't take up that position thinking it would get a touch of the defender and make him onside. He inadvertently took up an offside position... and got rewarded for it by a slight touch from a defender ( that only several minutes of VAR ) could decipher.
We're making football so unnecessarily complicated. And we're making ourselves so reliant on VAR decisions and tootball lawyers. It should have been offside, whether it was touched or not. It's a daft rule as it rewards bad play ie being in an offside position.

Simple. Haaland was played onside by the defenders foot and no other action lead to Haaland being offside. Any deflection of the pass or the attempt by Fernandez had no impact on the outcome.

That’s a different argument as to whether the law is correct, under the current laws (and most previously from memory of the offside law) it's a good goal.
I think the confusion arises as goals were disallowed under VAR previously for similar circumstances from Fernandez, but they were later acknowledged to have been incorrectly disallowed. | | | |

Haaland may not have been offside but Enzo Fernandez has to be!!
He made a very clear attempt to head the ball, missing it by a whisker at most.
The keeper has to react to the attempt by Enzo, meaning he can't get across to Haaland.
What am I missing? |
You are missing the fact that he made no impact on an opposition player getting to play the ball. Its in the laws. VAR got it right here. |  |

Not challenging for the ball, challenging the defender which prevents him getting to the ball. He would had to have either obstructed the defender or keeper in some way or made contact with the ball. |

Much like the handball law, they have over codified it, in an attempt to put in strict rules, what a referee used to have to use judgment on. And in doing so have made a hideous mess which gets worse with each convoluted iteration. | |

Ifab law 11. Only interfering if:
- Interfering with play: Playing or touching the ball.
- Interfering with an opponent: Obstructing an opponent's line of vision, challenging for the ball, or impacting their ability to play.
- Gaining an advantage: Playing the ball or interfering after a rebound, deflection, or save off the woodwork or an opponent.
None of the above apply to Fernandez. |

It’s not the rules that are the issue as such, it’s how VAR has been applied. The VAR can make a direct call on factual matters like someone is definitively offside. The on-field call was offside, so to over-turn the decision it’s a case of getting the lines out which they did. Enzo’s positioning is then a subjective call, so either the VAR does not get involved as not meeting the threshold of a clear and obvious error had been made and the on-field call of offside (albeit for presumably the wrong reason from the assistants perspective stands) or too award the goal, Michael Oliver needs to go to the screen for an on-field review. | | | |
