10 very quick thoughts - Everton 1-0 Town, starting attackers let team down 17:25 - Sep 19 with 2042 viewsunstableblue

Here we go as I walk out of possibly the best football ground I’ve been to:

1) overall we should have lost by 2 or 3 given the chances they had, but I think Town will leave with heads held fairly high, with some positives, but some real areas to improve and especially specific player performances

2) Bold move from ONeil on the selection, on what must have been an emotional day. Overall I liked a lot about the back 4, but we did get exposed at times. I really liked his change of two up front toward the end, which shows tactical flexibility. It almost worked. But Flemming and Maeda have to come on earlier.

3) Ouatarra is just a superb player, he kept Grealish mostly tamed. Signing of the window?

4) Everton and Moyes for me are impressive, but they never really got going at times and the locals were left frustrated. But their centre backs, and Mykelenko were absolutely brilliant. Emersonn was owned and that’s why we lost.

5) Fatawu, Enciso and our Brazilian frankly have to do much much better. Enciso fell into his worst trait of holding on too long. Very disappointed. Clarke also struggled, but improved as space opened, and he could range inside.

6) We look a completely different team to last time out in the Premier League. Lukic and Palacios make us tick, and have improved us. And Florentino means that we have depth. But as stated, often Everton’s player quality meant they bossed the game, and the space between the lines. Moyes and the fans complained about their transfer window. But it’s actually a strong set of players, Grealish, Dewsbury Hall, Maitland Niles, Garner, Armstrong - they’re quality. Dewsbury Hall and Barry (surprisingly) just damaged us.

7) So pleased about the VAR, 1-0 with ten is respectable. I did think Fatawu second yellow was harsh - need to see it again. But the ref after the VaR offside wanted to give something back to the Toffees.

8) Wonderful applause on 3 mins for the poor lad who passed away recently. Everton fans are great and friendly, what a contrast to Arsenal - they clapped with emotion.

9) Diop and OShea could become a strong partnership.

10) What a shame we didn’t steal an equaliser in that excellent momentum we had with the two strikers on. Let’s have the break, this 2 weekend off. Regroup. Avoid international injury. And let’s make PR a fortress for Fulham - who are not a bad side - 3 points then and today is easily forgotten.

Decisions and play in the final 3rd were definitely not great. But Everton did well to snuff out our options as well. Some of our approach play into the forwards was great. But that’s what Everton do, and they do it to much better forwards than ours.

Gotta hope you take the chance when you get it as you probably wont get 3 or 4.
Felt it was not going to be our day when Pickford saved well from Enciso in the start of the second half

Point six - Everton's issue isn't their starting XI but their depth. If they pick up injuries in key positions they'll be in trouble.

Before today I would have said exactly the same

And if we park the number 9 position, they were able to bring Tyler-Dibbling, Hackney, and George

That’s really not bad

But agree any serious losses, they’d struggle

Moyes is a great manager isn’t he though?

Dibling looked very good I thought. Didn’t have much impact last season, but given their tiny squad I’m sure he will this time round.

Interesting to read take from someone who spent his hard earned to watch the match live, while I watched from the sofa ( along with many I expect ). It's also interesting to see different opinions from the different perspectives. Your first point I thought was just a touch harsh, though I can see where you're coming from, we had 2 more attempts on target than they did 4-2.

Point 2) Largely agree.

Point 3) Yep!

Point 4) In my view Tarkowski has been one of the best centre backs in the PL for years. Criminally underrated.

Point 5) Second time away from home Emersonn has been a peripheral figure, thus far, not all his fault.

Point 6) We most certainly do look a very different team from last time. That one would have taken a tonking.

Point 7) Once you've seen it again, you'll know. Stupidity.

Point 8) Absolutely, came over very well on TV and even the commentators stopped commentating while it was happening. Class all round.

Point 9) They could

Point 10) Amen to that, and I hope you and our brilliant set of away fans have a safe journey home.

Thanks armchair

It was interesting chatting to Everton fans just now in the city centre… that group was split that we were poor and alternatively that we were a well structured and decent team

One thing they did confirm was they thought Ouatarra was good, albeit they are quite frustrated that Grealish has lost the desire or pace to the best the man

Enciso just held on to it too long… much like he and Hutchinson and he last time we were in the Prem.

Emersonn was just bullied.

If we’re going to stay up we have to have the front 4 making passages of threat into chances

Enciso needs better decision making.

Fatawu has so much potential but can be one dimension.

Ouatarra is class. Will end up doubling our money at least in him.

1-0 away to a David Moyes Everton with a dumb sending off from 65 minutes isn't awful.

The squad has a lot more player quality than last time in the Premier. Still needs tweaking.

point 8…indeed the Everton fans showed a load of class with their applause and as such I thought it was a bit crass that a few of our fans decided to chant l”your support is f*ing sh1t”…classy..not!

Thought Fatawu did well, apart from the cheap yellows.
Everton are a very well marshalled team, having wasted a corner the speed with which they retreated into their defensive blocs was really impressive, there were times we failed to break quick enough to trouble them.
Their centrebacks really are wily birds who know the business inside out, Emersonn like all our recent 9s at this level before him were isolated and just had to do the best they can. Thought he lost heart fairly quickly and would have had Flemming on earlier.
Our midfield is much vaunted on here, but Dewbury-Hall put them in the shade with ease. I see Palacios and Palacios as neat progressive passers, good when we have the ball, but lack bite and workrate when we don't. Their profile is very similar and though individually are very good, are not the ideal partnership to me. But accept it is early days in their partnership. I would be interested to see how a (Matusiwa or Mats type if he is too slow) would operate with Palacios or Lukic.

Agree I really want to see Florentino starting in a pairing. Probably with Palacios. I think we will be a bit harder edged without the ball.

We are far better equipped than last time and really do have the potential to survive.

However, we really do no need to reduce the amount of chances we are giving up, that is by far my biggest concern and could make it really difficult for ourselves.

I think Fatawu was OK they were struggling to contain him at times. Sadly Mykelenko had one of his good days, and did mainly shut him out.

Fatawu was trying to ‘take one for the team’ for his first, the second was just a bit silly on his part, and not very Ipswich, I think the ref was going for the yellow, before the exaggerated Everton player protests.

You make a good point on our central midfield- we have 4 holding mids really. And it’s a department that is making us look much better this season. BUT, I agree it’s lacking a bit of creativity. Forward thrust - Dewsbury hall and Garner epitomised a more balance midfield.

My worry if Florentino lacks creativity even more, so brining him in could exasperate the problem.

We shall see. It’s still early days.

Yup. We are better equipped. But we’ve got to get points in day when they are possible. Don’t think Everton were on their A game today, and there was a chance. But as you state we still have up a lot of chances. I think the defence and how the midfield come back to support it, can improve.

And it must. I think we’ll see that back 4 again against Fulham.

Having seen it on MotD, Fatuwa’s first was horrendous - blatant full on wrestling hold, far too much of that going on now in pro football, and refs sometimes letting it go. Hope GoN pulls all our players up over that if they do it.
