Man City away, Feb 1994… the loudest home fans I’ve ever heard… 10:46 - Oct 16 with 1335 viewsITFC_Forever

Was the day of Franny Lee’s first game as chairman and there were only a few hundred of us.

City had put on a load of pre-match events etc to get the fans excited and they were deafening…. Although that abated when Ian Marshall put us in the lead after around 15 minutes.

City came back to win 2-1, and their fans carried on the racket once they got level.

It’s up there above West Ham away in the POs in 2004, and other big atmospheres we’ve been part of.

I was there, great atmosphere that day.

Birmingham away in the semi final also up there with the loudest I've experienced.

Yeah. West Ham 2004 in the Play-Offs was crazy loud.

What gets forgotten or not mentioned is that we actually made a hell of a racket ourselves. It was just completely drowned out.

Leeds away in the FA Cup in the 1990 was the first time I’d ever thought ‘facking hell, it’s loud here’. We were in the side terracing. Marching on Together remains one of the best terrace anthems

If Darren Bent had put away that 1 on 1 chance he had in the first 2 minutes, then we’d only have heard Town fans from that point.

I had already been to the League game that season so was pre-warned.

Vinny scored that day which made it even louder.

Michael Cheetham missed an absolute sitter to win it at the end.

I was at that game. City fans had been campaigning to get rid of the previous chairman Peter Swales for ages with "Swales Out" chants and protests a regular feature of their matches. When it finally happened there were great celebrations, all the more so when 'one of their own' Francis Lee took over after a 'Forward with Frannie' campaign. He was greeted like the messiah on the pitch before the game. Town then took the lead after 15 minutes and when our own celebrations had died down a chant of "Frannie Out" went up from the away end. At that time City fans were the masters of ironic and self-deprecating humour and I think they probably afforded themselves a smile. Great days and a far cry from the sterile, corporate atmosphere at the Etihad in modern times.

Yes, what went wrong? Lee was a City hero and an astute businessman himself. He appointed his mate Alan Ball as manager, who got them relegated & then they had 4 managers the next season!
Shows how even people you think should be smart make terrible appointments.

Cheetham, there’s a blast from the past! Bought him from the Army, didn’t we? Didn’t do a lot for us, but had a great stint at Cambridge.

That Birmingham game was one of the few times that I’ve questioned my personal safety when leaving the ground. All the games against them in that era seemed to be needle games.

Yes, we bought him out of the army & while he didn't make the grade at Town, we got £50k from Cambridge for him & he had a few good seasons there under John Beck.

He has to be one of the most obscure Town players mentioned on here!

Dutch. 4 games only in 88/89 season. No goals.

On further looking, that Leeds game in Sep 89 was his last Town game. I suspect that absolute sitter was his final contribution in a blue shirt.

I met David Rocastle in about 2015. Really nice guy happy to chat about all sorts.
He was at a meeting of ex-players doing their FA Coaching Badges

I was in primary school in 89, my mum would not let me go to Leeds away much to my father's dismay. I was also banned from Chelsea away as it was 'too rough'. TWTD

Tempted to drag the programmes out from that season, I read them from cover to cover, word for word and cannot recall Cheetham, he really is obscure, brilliant!

Some eye opening days that is for sure. It was my first full-season of following Town away and I reckon I did 90% of them starting with Nodge in the Hospital Cup where fighting broke out in the seats next to me and a Town fan climbing the dividing fence in the Barclay End only to be pulled down by police. This, in turn, led to a surge and all you could see was a load of gob flying in the air from surging Town lot at the police in protest.

Wolves was a loud and intimidating place. That South Bank was a cracking atmosphere and it was a similar set up to our old North Stand but christ those Wolves lot were loud. Glad of the coach escort that day.

West Brom was another interesting one. A Baggies fan spent the first half staring in our direction while holding a brick and not one police or steward paid any attention to him.

There was a bit of a to do in the away end at Bournemouth as well with Luther Blissett at the heart of it.

Me and my dad went pretty much every game from 1985 - 2000 home and away then I went to uni so it was a bit more stop start.

I remember going to West Brom when it was terracing. I liked when i was a youngster Newcastle away when it standing in the corner and also Tranmere away which had a good away end, it was proper dodgy in the dark those back streets!

Mentions for trouble was probably Leicester away, Sheffield United away and Cardiff, Cardiff was lairy to Ninian Park.

Up to current day when I take my kids they get a health and safety check first from their mother and a healthy snack, games gone.

That's the one.

The whole place was feral, we were quite near the home fans and were showered with coins and anything else they could get their hands on for the whole 120 minutes.

Full pitch invasions after every goal too....

All feels a very long time ago.

Needed a good ten minutes at that point and it might have been different. Although given how feral many of the Brum fans were it might well have been a good thing they scored again so quickly.

That was proper intimidating, the one good thing about losing was it meant we could get back to the car in one piece as all the home fans were on the pitch.

Thick fog on the way home as well, took an eternity to navigate the A14 and it was nearly 3am when we got back.

Atmosphere was a bit tasty for sure. We should have won the first leg by more if my memory is correct and we missed a big chance early on as well at St Andrews. Pitch was unplayable really!
