| The potential success this season.. the effect on KM 09:18 - Oct 21 with 1576 views | FrimleyBlue | Im only asking this as saw a post game comment on twitter by popular sports journalist. Apologies i cant post it as i cant remember who it was but it was all about the city game and how O'neil threw on flemming and Akpom and the basis of a plan B where as KM didnt appear to have one. I am mentioning it as i know its not the first time ive seen similar mentioned or writtwn by others who cover the sport. Now. We all know the context of the prem season under KM. The speed of promotion etc. But i just wondered not from a town fan perspective but from a general footballing one.. does the potential success of this season slightly damage the reputation of KM. As say only asking as id always only seen the no plan B mentioned by some town fans not those involved in the game itself. | |

We were short in attack and didn't have a single midfielder good enough for the league.

I also saw a tweet which referenced the fact that The Cruncher had called in to Radio Suffolk saying that O'Neil was on a different level to KM and that he would never adjusted the formation, despite the fact that Mckenna regularly rotated formations in the prem. He also said he was a 4231 guy and never went away from it, despite going away from it, often. These people have podcasts talking about football. In terms of the comparison. O'Neil is doing a brilliant job. He also has vastly better players. Mckenna would have probably liked Palacios, Lukic, Florentino and Matuswia. If people cant see the difference, football probably isn't for them. |
DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON THIS. I have posted on this so much and the absolute misnomer that KM played a rigid formation.

I think until people see 2 out and out strikers on the pitch they just reject the idea any system has been tweaked.

Fernando Alonso was 2x World Champion at Ferrari, went to McLaren and never got even a podium in 3 years. Vettel, 4x World Cham at Red Bull and did nothing for Aston Martin. The context is everything, we were sub standard last time out. Chaplin and Burns are now in L1, Morsy's at Blackburn, Clarke at Preston, Burgess at Swansea, Woolfy not even close to the Cov team, Johnson and Hirst at Stoke, Szmodics at Derby. Ogbene, Phillips and Luongo in the Championship. Al-Hamadi and Harness in L1. Age is a factor with 1 or 2, but ultimately that was never close to being a Premier League squad. McKenna was revving a Dacia Sandero in a field of Ferrari's. Outside of that season he's proven himself highly capable and comparing the tools he had vs. those O'Neil has isn't reasonable. His next job will be in the Premier League and rightly so. That's not to say we gave it a great fist last time, but for me it was more down to recruitment than McKenna. Sunderland, Hull and Cov have taken very different approaches than we did and that looks like it could be more fruitful. |
Quality post. Really helpful to look at the 2 sets of players and compare. McKenna's players did us proud, but honestly, this lot are a cut above them in terms of experience and ability. That's no slight on KM - if anything it actually enhances his credentials that he got an average bunch to the levels he did.

Context is also a bit subjective- 5 of our starters last Saturday against MC were in the 24/25 squad. And 2 of our bench also - one of whom came on as a sub. Add in Delap, Hutchison and Twanzabe and really the main difference this season is that we’ve improved the quality of our midfield and the rest have gained more PL experience. Having said that, 4 of last weekend’s starters had no PL experience prior to this season and 2 of them are 22 and 20 years old. Ultimately it’s unfair and a bit pointless to compare KM and GON. We wouldn’t be in the PL if it wasn’t for KM. And so far, GON has impressed with how quickly he has got his ideas into his team and how well coached they are, but there’s a long way to go and we are only a couple of bad results off the bottom 3.

It was lightning in a bottle with that squad. It just clicked for two seasons. But ultimately the Premier League was a step too far for some. No shame in that. Bounced straight back up and called it a day. Better to go out on a high leaving with some club legends that were most probably leaving in the summer. O'Neill must have been salivating at coming here. He's done pretty well so far too.
