The thing which gives me most comfort is the performances. Two years ago, virtually every game looked like a cup tie between a lower-division challenger and a Prem side. There was the slim chance of an upset every now and then. This time, we look genuinely competitive and with the stamina to remain so throughout the full 90+ minutes. Sure, there are still times we are outclassed, but that's only against the best teams (or those with the best players having a good day, Fernandes/Isak) and we even gave ManC a run for their money at the Etihad. Which is reflected in results - having got something from half our games, with a 37.5% win rate - and position in mid table.

We're a couple of losses away from the bottom three. It's a tight league this season, we shouldn't be expecting to stay up just because we're 12th or whatever now. It's going to be a slog and we (along with Hull and Coventry) are still most likely to drop. The likes of Manure, Sunderland, and co. haven't changed managers yet either to get a bounce either. That usually helps, as it did with Wolves when we were last up.

Altho changing managers is something of a lottery, especially at a club like ManU which is rapidly disintegrating from within. Plus the later they leave it, the bigger the defecit to turn around and less time to reorganise.

The things that stands out for me is that: a) we are much more competitive b) the gap in quality seems to have reduced c) Europe could prove a bit of a curveball to the so called "smaller" clubs For me there are reasons to be cheerful.
| Ooooh great MOTD stat on 13:26 - Oct 26 with 920 views | CaptainAhab | Sounds positive, but only things is we don't have 10+ points, we have 10 points. I wonder how the stats would look if you took the + bit out and looked at teams who had 10 points after 8 games? I agree with Guthrum though, the difference in performances from last time round is night and day and gives me a lot of hope. [Post edited 26 Oct 13:27]

Going back over the last 10 completed seasons, teams in the Prem on exactly 10 points after 8 games (may not all be the same week): 25/26 Brentford in 13th, finished 9th on 53 pts 24/25 Brentford in 13th, finished 10th on 56 pts 23/24 Nobody 22/23 Liverpool in 10th, finished 5th on 67 pts Brentford in 10th, finished 9th on 59 pts Everton in 11th, finished 17th on 36 pts 21/22 Aston Villa in 13th, finished 14th on 45 pts 20/21 Leeds in 15th, finished 9th on 59 pts 19/20 Wolverhampton Wanderers in 11th, finished 7th on 59 pts 18/19 Nobody 17/18 West Bromwich Albion in 10th, finished 20th on 31 pts 16/17 West Bromwich Albion in 12th, finished 10th on 45 pts Only one of the above ended up relegated, WBA in 2017-18, tho Everton in 2022-23 had a close shave. Both of them collapsed badly after a decent start (21 points from 30 games, going from Pulis via Megson and Pardew to Moore in the dugout at the Hawthorns; 26 from 30 under Lampard and Dyche, scraping survival on the final day at Goodison Park).

So we're staying up then? Nice!
| Ooooh great MOTD stat on 14:28 - Oct 26 with 730 views | C_Jam_Blue | I suddenly noticed on Sunday the way I watch MOTD has changed this season. Usually I would watch the main 2 or 3 games and only stay up for the last couple if they involved Town. Now I am more keen to watch Hull, Bournemouth, Sunderland, Coventry etc than any of the other games (Town games aside) to see which are looking most likely to finish below us. | | | |

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the big clubs play on Sunday so often these days.

Yeah I get that, I just meant no point comparing the teams who had more than 10 points, as we don't have more than 10, and presumably the ones that did/do are far more likely to be staying up, so skewing the stats.
| Ooooh great MOTD stat on 15:05 - Oct 26 with 597 views | northants | Certainy this stat is reason for optimism. More so though, is our early season resilience - this will need to continue as inevitably the likes of Forest, Spurs, Man U will improve their positions hugely as the campaign continues. Whilist I am loving our resilience, i do feel (similar to Man u with Fernandes), if we were to lose Palacios for an extended period, I think this could really really hurt us. Staying cautiously optimistic for now......! | | | |
