England cricket best XI since 2000..... 13:51 - Sep 11 with 1999 views | ITFC_Forever | As it's the last day of the last test of the summer and Cook is retiring from International duty: Cook Strauss Stewart (wk) Vaughan Root Pietersen Flintoff Broad Swann Anderson Harmison Would probably need to tinker with the exact batting order. I don't claim to be a student of the game as such, but just picked players I feel have performed well, assuming 5 bowlers (including 1 spinner and 1 all-rounder) and 6 batsmen (allowed by the added bonus Stewart can keep wicket as well). The best of the rest (bowlers):Simon Jones would have got closer to the side had he not spent half his time injured, Panesar had he had some more variety and Hoggard, Giles also unlucky to miss out. Batsmen: Bell had he not spent half his time being wildly inconsistent away from Edgbaston, Trott, Thorpe also in with a shout. And there's bound to be at least a couple of obvious ones I have missed out. [Post edited 11 Sep 2018 14:00]

As much as I love Ian Bell I think you'd take him out for Root. That's the only change I'd make to your side.

I might have Hussein in ahead of Vaughan, as good as Vaughan was at his best Hussein had to drag the team through matches at times.

Must admit I ummed and ahh-ed about Harmison as when he was off, he was very off. But when he was on, he was genuinely world class.

England cricket best XI since 2000..... on 15:04 - Sep 11 with 1869 views | vapour_trail | Cook Trescothick Vaughan* Root Pietersen Stokes Prior+ Flintoff Swann Broad Anderson The last two have to be your new ball bowlers based on this century. Flintoff and Stokes as first change attack who can both bat higher up the order. Harsh on Bell and you could argue the batting order lacks the temperament of a thorpe or collingwood in there.

If he'd stayed fit and played a few more series he'd be a shoo-in for me, terrific bowler.

It is a really sad story. to think that he never played after trent Bridge again. he was a fantastic bowler, and if the rules of the game are that these players are being picked at their peak, then he's got to be in with a shout. possibly even above Broad.

Watching his highlights reel over the 05 Ashes is one of my favourite things to do.

I'd have Vaughan in there instead of Strauss otherwise pretty much agree. Trott is a good shout, arguably our best specialist number 3 this century.

I'd oddly forgotten about Vaughan, which is odd considering I have been listening to him for the last 5 days

There is probably some correlation between exposure to Vaughan as a pundit and forgetting what a fantastic cricketer he was.

Yep. That, and arguably his best series as an England batsman came during an Ashes thrashing.

You have to find a place for Thorpe. Gutsy and classy and to average 49 against the Aussies in their prime is unbelievable. In for Root and Vaughan for Strauss to give that left / right opening balance
