I only met Kevin Beattie once, but glad I did. He told me the story of how he nearly signed for Liverpool before he signed for Ipswich. Apparently no-one met him at the station and so he returned home.

Years later, he attended a testimonial for Bill Shankley who told him that his failure to sign him, was one of his few regrets as a manager.

Great player, great man. Will be much missed.

The greatest allround player that I have ever seen.

Had a few brief chats with him but sadly there will be no more.

If it is right for a man to "love" another man then I loved The Beat.

I have had tears in my eyes since hearing the news.

This isn't an easy read but somehow that makes it all the better

Snr just told me this was his favourite memory of the Beat in action

Just the greatest.

Reports are quoting Sir Bobby's comment that he was the greatest England footballer he ever saw. They do not seem to be mentioning that Sir Bob said The Beat was the best player he ever managed - and he managed Ronaldo among many others.

I assume his poor wife is still alive. I hope she is being, and will continue to be, well looked after.

R.I.P Kevin. Total legend. Such a shock. Remember a goal he scored when we thrashed WBA 7-1. Even John Osbourne, their keeper, admitted he ducked out of the way.

RIP Beats!
I had the pleasure of watching him in is heyday and one of the best memories is in the San Siro with 10,000 fans singing ‘Beattie is back’ when we spotted him in the crowd! Sad day

My late Father told me the North stand would all sing "Kevin Beatties's testimonial"...through games leading up to the game itself where PR was pretty much full...

Says it all..

Very sad news..

Lucky to have saw him play towards the end of his career.

Sadly I don't think we will see another player like him in our lifetimes.

A true legend of the game - RIP KB

Oh my word. I've just seen this.

How terribly, terribly sad.

Poor Kevin. What a lovely man. So sorry for his family and those close to him.

RIP Beattie. Thank you for a better childhood watching the Town than I would have probably had without you.
