The reputation of our country went from in the toilet to round the U-bend and then into the sewer. EU countries will be glad when we're gone.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Despite our enthusiastic efforts at urban regeneration?

I can’t begin to imagine what goes through people’s heads. So many aggressive morons around these days (and have been for a while in footie, to be honest).

Me neither.
My social scene throughout my life has always included women.
Even on a lads night out, one or two of us will bring our partners.
Maybe these guys just need to get laid.

No doubt there were some utter scumbags in amongst all that, but not sure what that lad in the black t-shirt holding the pint did to deserve getting truncheoned in the leg like that...

Probably nothing, but when you've got idiots facing up to a police force less tolerant than ours it's the kind of collateral damage you get. Easy enough to stop if people simply stop behaving like utter dickheads.

Whilst it is frustrating our country still has an issue with hooliganism after all these years, sadly i fear it wont go away anytime soon unless they are prevented from travelling to games. In this day and age, it should be fairly easy to video, pick out and ban/stop people from travelling.
What is more concerning is the way other countries seemingly get away with violence at big games and tournaments - see Russia, etc.
Its not just an English problem.

You can't really ban people from travelling into Europe for getting drunk and chanting which is what the majority of this is

It is easy to get caught up in trouble at England away games. And it's just as easy to avoid it. I always took the avoid option. All it meant was avoiding large groups of people singing WW2 and anti-IRA songs, avoiding main squares, fanzones, the bar opposite the station and any Oirish bar. Leaving me 95% of any city and its bars for a few beers, usually meeting fans of loads of other clubs and having a great time.

Depends on the situation. I agree that a lot of this is blown out of proportion and the media hype/report minor events.

Arguably, if Portugal has an equivalent of s.5 of the Public Order Act, most of them.

It's not quite that simple, because for some a lot of the fun is the drinking and socialising in the bigger venues like main squares and fan parks - and they don't want any trouble.

But the problem is the atmosphere can flip like a switch and often there is heavy handed policing to go with it and then the thing becomes a disaster

It is that simple. Not that you should always avoid main squares or Fanzones, but, if you do go there, you are simply at much higher risk of getting caught up in a fight. So, you make a choice.

In 13 years of doing every England away game plus a load of other games across Europe, I only ever got caught up in trouble once, in Spain, when the OB baton charged outside and inside the stadium.

But it's only that simple if you are happy to take a different approach to the trip - many aren't. I much preferred to be in the hub of the action when spending 5 or 6 years following England around and never saw any real trouble.

But things that look like big incidents on videos are often nothing when you are actually there - and then other times you can be caught up in things because the police have gone on the warpath. I had friends who were just smashed with batons by the OB in barcelona when nowhere near any trouble but because they were English fans and the police had had a bad day. They just pulled up alongside them, jumped out and smashed them in the legs for no reason before jumping back in and driving off.

It never flips like a switch, have always seen it coming a mile off!!!!! As soon as old bill/riot police start turning up is the time to move on.

You can see it coming, but a lot of time the OB are just standing there the whole day, waiting to go
