Shin splints... 08:48 - Jun 18 with 2067 views | TIB | A condition I'd heard of before but always considered to be something a hypochondriac might get...until now!!! I've been in the gym a lot the last couple of years...lifting weights for the most part with HIIT circuits in-between, however, the last six months I've begun running more (on road) and have developed shin splints!!! I've left rest gaps when the legs have started to hurt and after about 3 weeks off I started running again 2 weeks back, doing 5k every other night...they're back though!!! Has anyone got tips for shifting / managing these?

Something I'm considering, that and getting a proper massage. Apparently a massage can help to work them out!?!

I would lean more toward what RIG said, in addition to that, if you want to keep up the physical activity, its pool time for a while imho [Post edited 18 Jun 2019 9:13]

Sone well meaning misinformation in this thread. Shin splints is an umbrella term for a number of conditions. You need to know which. If it is compartment syndrome or similar it can often be assisted with orthotics to correct mechanical imbalances in gait etc. If its micro stress fractures it needs rest. The latter tends to affect younger people.

Insoles? I had/have issues with my achilles so purchased some of Ronnie Irani's insoles. I think they've helped but I've been doing other corrective things as well. https://www.orthosole.com/insoles-for-sports/

Shin splints... on 10:38 - Jun 18 with 1866 views | Fixed_It | Definitely a footwear issue. Used to suffer from them but no longer an issue since I invested in proper running shoes. I also do ankle rotations as part of my warm-up (read about it somewhere) and that seems to help too.

Footwear can mitigate impact and reduce symptoms but its important to diagnose the actual issue and its cause ...

A lot of folk have mentioned footwear so will look at some new trainers. My current shoes are not specifically for running...I'm probably being naïve to a need for a specialist shoes so will give that a go...as well as going to a physio to get a proper diagnosis. The main pain is on the inside of the shin...in that gap between shin bone and calf...it starts at top of ankle and runs about half way up between knee and ankle. [Post edited 18 Jun 2019 11:01]

True. I forgot to mention that I took several weeks off before re-starting from scratch with proper footwear. It certainly worked for me - had no issues since. Running in ordinary trainers on a regular basis caused my problems originally - leading to impact/stress related injury. [Post edited 18 Jun 2019 11:02]

Shin splints... on 11:14 - Jun 18 with 1792 views | ZurichBlue | From my experiences many years ago when I was playing either football or squash 4 or 5 times a week and running every day I would recommend seeing a specialist if the symptoms persist. I was diagnosed many time with shin spilts by my GP who recommended rest as the only cure but after a couple of years of intense activities and frequent rest periods of a couple of months each time I eventually got a referral to see a specialist. He very quickly diagnosed anterior compartment syndrome and following successful compartment release surgery on both lower legs and 3 months of Physio I was cured and have not suffered since. I’m not suggesting you have the same condition but my point is to get a referral to see a specialist. FWIW I was told by my specialist that in broad terms shin splints are generally associated with the lower inner shin area, whereas anterior compartment syndrome the pain and numbness is generally associated with the middle to lower outsides of the shins. Good luck in resolving the root cause of your ailment.
