WHO Director General: Don't spread fear and stigma with travel bans 20:57 - Feb 4 with 1255 viewsgiant_stow

http://www.cnnphilippines.com/world/2020/2/5/WHO-don-t-spread-fear-travel-bans.h

Find this a bit counter intuitive peesonally, especially coming from someone who's prime concern should be health.

Anyone know why travel bans wouldnt work, as he says? Seems like a great way to stop the virus spreading to this layman.

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

I suppose he is thinking of the effects of overreaction to a disease which has, so far, resulted in only a few hundred deaths* and spread little beyond the region where it originated. If all Chinese (or all Asians) become stigmatised as "plague bearers", that can itself cause problems.

* Compared with the big killers like Typhoid, Sleeping Sickness and Malaria, which each cause between one and five hundred thousand deaths every year.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Yeah theres definately a danger of stigmatising Chinese bods.

Just read an interesting artivle on the 'health diplomacy' of all this:
https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/feb/05/the-coronavirus-lays-

'And on this front some are pointing to a startling contradiction: how the UN body has praised the extreme internal travel restrictions in China while criticising other countries for implementing their own travel measures'

How safe are their takeaways ?

What about Spring rolls, just coming into season ?

Can we be sure about a rick shaw (whoever he is) ?

The government needs to act, now - to protect us from this threat from Hong Kong fluey.

I spose everything a takeaway puts out is cooked, so i assume they're alright. Likrwise spring rolls.

Has rick shaw been to china lately? Hows he feeling now if so? Might be wise for him to self-isolate for a while?

It's the Wuhan virus though fella, not hong kong. Lets keep this acurate.

This is the point though, they need to control the spread of the infection because it's got a decent r0 factor and if it gets out in any meaningful way the cases can grow exponentially and with it the deaths.

There were 219m cases of malaria last year. If you scale this virus up to that with the current mortality rates it's 4.4m deaths (compared with 400k for malaria). The real issue would be that if that many people were infected then the scope for mutation is absolutely huge and with that could come higher mortality factors.

There is a lot of hyperbole but direct comparisons to existing and worldwide diseases isn't really that helpful. The idea is to stop it becoming a worldwide disease.

Rick Shaw is busy, so I here. Ran off his feet.

Takeaway workers are not wearing masks to there is every chance they will be spreading this flu. Wuhan flu over the birdsnest soup, perhaps.

Todays Daily Express has a guide on to how to spot someone who is Chinese, under the headline 'use your noodle'. Written by their flew expert Cathy Pacific.

Even the Sun is trying to help the public with it's guide to Premier League footballers who look Chinese.

Yep, there are reports of Chinese people being targeted for abuse, discrimination or being shunned (or shunned) already emerging. Even been some reports in the UK. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51348593

Awful and unfortunately I think it boils down to the same thing which is causing many issues in society - education.

The levels of education across the whole population seem to be very poor with very limited understanding of fairly simple scientific subjects and very little in the way of critical thinking skills.

It's not going to change - we need to do better at educating the next generation so they are armed with the knowledge and skills they need so they don't make these mistakes.

In fairness to our education and thinking abilities, this is an extremely tricky issue. For instance, I see Hong Kong has just implemented compulsory quarenteen for all visitors from the Chinese mainland: https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/feb/05/coronavirus-live-updates-in-c

Obviously that's not a racist or prejudiced act, but its one which could cause more shunning of ethnic Chinese people.

Not sure how that equates to stigmatising Chinese people in the UK which was what my post was about (I've done a separate one on the travel bans and virus).

It is down to a lack of knowledge. People who make these comments or cancel their bookings don't understand how the virus is transmitted or how it affects humans - they just equate Chinese and virus and do stupid things.

I think it's entirely down to education.

The HK quarantine is totally different, that is for people coming in from China who have a chance of having the disease, not people in Chinatown in London who haven't been anywhere near China.

I do think you're being a little harsh on folk in the UK who are worried.

How's a person in Chinatown to know whether a ethnic chinese bod they see there is a Londoner or a Chinese tourist? Espcially tricky when someone may be infected but show no signs of that for 14 days.

When even the WHO are sending out contradictory messages (external, non-Chinese state-sanctionned shunning bad - internal Chinese state shunning good) can joe public really be criticised for taking their own view on matters?

I realise I'm getting close (or even past) a dangerous line
