Damn, this is a great overall analysis of the Labour report! 15:47 - Apr 20 with 1453 viewsDarth_Koont

The problem with so many pages to get through and details to address was in effectively summing it up. This article does a very good job and works through the critical aspects of the report in detail.

Read it. As the author states at the beginning, with good reason, the report "is an important document, that is fundamental to understanding a major turning point in UK history, where Northern European social democracy failed to re-establish itself in the UK."

I for one would be totally shocked and appalled if it turned out that a load of comfortable, New Labour middle class luvvies would do anything as underhand as what is being suggested here. Shocked I tell you.

That as maybe but it's inherently correct.

I'll need to find another write up of the leaked documents to ensure balance etc. but what a f*cking mess of a situation from the likes of the BBC and the Guardian - that is not to say all is rosy with Labour on this.

Indeed. It's clear on this evidence that he should have been much more ruthless rather than trusting the Labour-right to work towards getting elected. It still astonishes me that this was even a thing.

The Panorama documentary in particular couldn't be more dodgy now. And it was suspicious even at the time.

Not so much in this article, but I've seen other journalists and Labour folk talking about the Guardian as the main conduit for leaks because they say the journalists and the saboteurs were already close and/or moving in the same circles. That's just hearsay with only limited evidence but the Guardian has been more than a little muted in its response, which they definitely need to sort out, whether they've been complicit or not. They've written hundreds of articles commenting on the Labour Party and criticising from the other direction.

If Starmer doesn’t tackle this report head on he’s lost my vote before he’s sat down.

Although I did join the Green Party yesterday.

The reaction, sadly, from the press is predictable.

Starmers reaction is way more worrying.

It'll take some time to investigate.

But of course he should already have suspended half-a-dozen or more already pending this investigation. There are countless infractions of Labour Party regulations and values given in their own documented words.

I still have faith in Starmer but any delay or excuses here will possibly take him down too.

Why is he going to do that? They are his people.

And i take it then that you've haven't seen who he received 50k from?

I don't think they are his people. These people are anti-democratic loons who don't care about others.

Starmer may be more to the moderate side of the party but I still think he's committed to change and I also think he'll show a damn sight more respect to the members.

The Chinn donation isn't a problem in itself. Let's just assume that he thought that Starmer was the best choice out of the three candidates rather than looking to get undue influence over any future policy. I've been critical of lobbyists but more how they act and the sometimes dubious tactics they use to influence but there's no evidence of that yet as far as I can see.

Re: that, McDonnell who's pretty angry about the whole thing seems supportive of Starmer now that he's announced there'll be an investigation. The delay seems to be in announcing the independent investigator which I suppose is naturally going to be an importnat choice to make sure they're as independent and credible as possible.

There's not much more to be done or said before then. Although Starmer really must suspend those under investigation, not just nudge McNicol into taking a token step back from the front bench if that's what happened.

Well it's going to be interesting reading your posts over the coming weeks as you gradually come to the realization that Labour is now basically FUBAR.

Thank you for posting this. Really interesting. I hope what truly happened within the Labour Party on this is not swept under the carpet and is faced head on by Starmer. I think other political parties need to take a good look in the mirror too.

Or nothing to do with that but more about where his loyalties within Labour lie...

"Chinn is associated with the Labour Friends of Israel.[6][7] He has donated to the office or campaigns of a number of Labour Partypoliticians, including MPs Tony Blair, Ruth Smeeth, Liz Kendall, Tom Watson and Dan Jarvis up to 2016.[8] Since 2016 he has additionally financially supported the MPs Ivan Lewis, Owen Smith, Lisa Nandy, Tristram Hunt, Jack Dromey, Ian Austin, Rachel Reeves and Liam Byrne.[9] In February 2020, he donated £50,000 to support the Labour party leadership election campaign of Keir Starmer.[10]"

Hang on. Squidders is right to be wary. Our politics, media and those who look to influence them have clearly become a bit of a mess from a democratic standpoint.

But not everything or everyone can immediately be tarred with the same brush. Even if like Chinn you're heavily involved with BICOM one of the most active pro-Israel lobbyists and have a history of supporting the Labour right, there still needs to be evidence that this is about deciding future policy or that Starmer would be bought in this way.

I think a bit more transparency and honesty about how active and influential the pro-Israel lobby is would help. If we were talking about Russia it would rightly be discussed and not dismissed as russophobia.
