Schools might not be back any time soon 12:47 - May 13 with 1060 views | Mullet | This has just come out from TES I've been getting lots of email and correspondence from my union (and colleagues in a different one). It seems that there is a growing concern that safety is genuinely being ridden over to get us back in. Sunday's announcement about intentions to put some pupils back in without consulting education staff seems to have caused a ripple effect. There has been a concerted effort by Andrew Adonis in what I can only call a crusade against teacher unions via twitter. His output has become increasingly irresponsible in my opinion, caveated by "[he] didn't mean that" type support. It is fairly galling given he is a Labour peer and has education policy experience to see him trying to cause division and pick sides like this. He tellingly doesn't respond to questions which challenge this narrative that teachers are being mislead/ignored by unions into wilfully sabotaging attempts to go back. While I'm not a great fan of the NEU its guidance is forensic and thorough and seems to me to be written by or with the help of H&S savvy. https://neu.org.uk/coronavirus Please don't buy into this age-old mudslinging towards the profession, given so much of the job is about relationships and interactions, there probably isn't a dedicated and successful teacher out there who prefers this method of working or the assumptions that go with it. Most of us I speak to are very concerned about the volume of children not engaging, losing time and in the extreme cases at risk of all sorts of harm the longer they are off. The cooperation with the initial lockdown, changes in working habits and magicking up lessons and resources almost immediately seems to be forgotten by these people. Likewise the grading process for GCSEs has been complex and incredibly stressful, but done with the support of teachers to help students get the best outcomes in unusual circumstances.

Schools might not be back any time soon on 12:56 - May 13 with 1003 views | Swansea_Blue | Here in Wales, from what I can make out it sounds like that could be it for this year for those kids not in the priority return phase. The thought of having to juggle work and kids until September is something I can't really face right now, or until I've got a few beers lined up in front on me.

No, it's horrendous frankly and I'd go back yesterday if I could, but the idea of testing /PPE that engulfed the NHS following suit here is terrible for the morale and perception already out there. I also fear for the health implications given we are seeing kids handing in work in the early hours of the morning in a minority of cases. What sort of diet and lifestyle timebombs are being made right now across the country?

Schools might not be back any time soon on 13:02 - May 13 with 975 views | homer_123 | I think it was clear that 'from' was the key word here. It's highly unlikely many would be ready or able to go back by then. Given the situation anyone 'going back to their place of work' is going to have grave concerns about health and safety - in a school setting, where it's hard for kids to keep social distancing (although I think that was being dropped for schools), it's doubly difficult. No simply or easy answers here. (or anywhere really)

I can imagine how difficult it is having kids and not having easy access to outdoor space in the current situation. There are some very good reasons for getting some groups of kids back earlier than others. But there are also very good reasons (more becoming apparent each day), that too early a return will be problematic. That said, I have no doubt, that even if all kids are back by Sept - there will be further times where we'll have the kids at home.

Yep. As annoying the thought of a lengthier absence is, I'd much rather that than risk of kicking off a second wave of infections and deaths. We've got to be in a position where it demonstrably safe to go back; that guarantee/confidence doesn't seem to be there yet. But we are getting there. Another 4/5/6 weeks of lockdown and we could be talking about very, very low numbers of reinfections/R number, etc. And that would also allow time for adequate preparations to be put in place.

Are you teaching the kids how to pour correctly, or are they able to handle G&Ts by now?

That makes it even more appalling then as he knows what he's doing.
