Fedex advice required 13:56 - Aug 14 with 1133 viewsBlueStreak

I ordered a poster off Etsy a while ago and paid £8 shipping which was fine (the poster was about £40). This poster was sent sent from New York and arrived a couple of days after, no problem at all.

I have now received a couple of letters from Fedex requesting I pay £24 for this product, if not they will pass to their debt collection blah blah.

Does anyone know where I stand with this, appreciate it is only £24 but not I am not particularly happy at the principle of paying it, especially when I have paid £8 postage at the time and it was a poster ffs.

Any advice?

I send a lot of posters internationally and this sounds totally bizarre to me, as you are not their customer, the sender is. Are you certain this is not a scam in some way?

my first thought is are the letters from Fedex or is it a scam?

It looks legit and is the third chaser I have had. I think it is really odd, just don't want something going onto my credit history for this rubbish.

Exactly this, if the sender didn't pay the correct cost for sending (not even sure how this would happen), they would be going after the sender. If it's import duty, they collect it before delivering.

Royal Mail charge £12.40 for handling if there is VAT due, so it's in that ballpark. But I've never known any shipping company to deliver the item *before* collecting the fees.

It doesn't really say. Just usual thongs such as invoice number, date, and amount due.

They do have a telephone number on the invoices that does correspond with Fedex in Stanstead. I am just wondering if they have got me confused with the seller?

I am normally pretty savvy with these things but haven't got a clue here!

Well if the number matches up, I would call them and ask. It could be VAT plus a handling fee, but I've never known an item to be delivered before this has been paid (either in advance by the sender, or by the recipient prior to the package being released for delivery).

If it is VAT and handling, I would just pay it if I were you and chalk it up to experience. Even if you know how to mark up the customs declaration on an item to avoid duty, it's still a gamble every time and is just the risk you take when importing anything from outside the EU.
