Good article that shows how Trump might claim ‘victory’ on Nov 3rd on 17:51 - Sep 1 with 952 views | Oldsmoker | Trump has said he'll only lose if the election is rigged. Actually, it's the other way round, he'll only win if the election is rigged. Challenging the election results is his fall-back position. His current position is to empower his base to get in their trucks with their Trump2020 flags, paint guns and pellet guns and "patrol the streets" in order to terrorise the voters into staying away from the polls. He wants those democrat voters who will queue to vote on Nov 3rd to be too scared to do so because they fear that Trumps base will turn up with real guns. In a years time Trump could be awaiting trial for tax fraud, insurance fraud, misappropriation of campaign funds, misappropriation of taxpayer funds, breaking emolument laws - the list goes on. ...or he could be leading a government that is actively imprisoning thousands of Americans who he sees as his enemies. The next 8 weeks are history in the making and I'm relieved it's happening somewhere else and not here.

You'd think so but no, they basically start counting the postal votes on polling day. Have a google on "Hanging chads" which was a court issue in Florida around votes being allowed / not allowed weeks after the election of Bush (vs Gore) that was basically decided in the courts. Had Gore won Florida he'd have been president. Took a long time to sort out. A similar scenario of disputed results could take a time to sort out if the electoral college is close. I think it was shown that Gore should have won too (eventually) although could be wrong in that. Maybe one of our American Twtders can add a bit more.

Thanks for that. But don’t we do the same thing here; the postal ballots are brought in and counted alongside the in person votes from 10pm? Admittedly, they’d have far more to count! Just reading up on this, it looks like the key concern is the ballots won’t arrive on time to be counted. Trump is disenfranchising a huge portion of his populace.

I think our proportion of postal votes is far lower ordinarily. Plus cos of CV many US voters are reluctant to go and stand in a crowded place to queue/vote hence why they are expecting far more postal votes than usual. And like you say, there is a huge controversy over the US postal service and whether they can ensure all the postal votes get delivered on time and allegations that Trump is seeking to hinder that process (as most people think the postal votes will be scewed to Biden supporters) Recipe for a dogs breakfast, no doubt about that.

Trouble is, our lot are watching and paying attention. What happens there now, happens here in a few year's time. Don't think they aren't looking into all sorts of weaselly ways to fiddle the vote. Case in point: this - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/aug/31/tory-plans-to-scrap-election-wa I'm sure it has nothing to do with this: https://news.sky.com/story/conservative-party-under-investigation-over-2-6m-eu-e

Johnson will be hoping for a Trump victory as it gives him more leeway to push the boundaries over here. Whilst Trump's on the scene, other populist leaders become normalised and if they can steer just to the left of him (as Johnson is doing), all the better for them because they seem Prime Ministerial/Presidential by comparison. Since Trump's been in charge, the definition of conservatism has changed. It used to be about cutting deficits, limited government and respecting traditions. but has now been replaced by blind faith, false patriotism and authoritarianism. We're seeing that with Trump glorifying violence (" when the looting starts, the shooting starts") and implementing Muslim bans, whilst over here people are lauding the Tories for being conservative again, seemingly because they're willing to inflict economic self harm and attack political traditions like civil service neutrality and cultural heritage like the BBC. It's scary stuff and Trump's defeat would go some way to toning down the disregard for democratic institutions that we're seeing over here [Post edited 1 Sep 2020 23:51]
