Used to know a pyrotechnic engineer who was sacked for f*cking up a public fireworks display. He was bang out of order. [Post edited 5 Nov 2020 18:33]

It's all about a bit of responsibility. I did an excellent show one year but planned it all and everyone had a great time. I posted a note to all the neighbours in advance and invited those closest. I had a big garden at the time and spent days setting it up. I had piles of the things and around 30 people over. Fenced off an area to keep the kids behind, bain marie and slow cookers full of hot food and French sticks piled up on the worktops. It was brilliant fun.

It's when people let the things off away from the date it's a big problem. You can plan for the one night, but anything random catches you out.

My hatred of fireworks comes from my sheer terror every 5th November when my old man would return to every firework that hadn't gone off/had fallen over it, fag in mouth, to bend over and give it a good eyeball from 6 inches away.

Mine too, it’s heartbreaking to watch, why on earth we still allow this sort of nonsense is beyond me, I wouldn’t trust half of these mouth breathers with stapler let alone household grade pyrotechnics.

Ha, things have changed since those days. I went to a place in Cambridge and bought a kit so I could let off the rockets by remote. The big blocks had long fuses etc. I went to a carpet shop and got a load of inner tubes that I placed in lines in the ground for the rockets and went along and reloaded them when they were done. For the blocks I'd got some patio slabs so everything was nice and flat with no room for error. [Post edited 5 Nov 2020 18:43]

I have no problem with it. Would prefer organized displays only, but it ain't ever going to happen, so just go with it. My dog is terrified of them, always has been. All the stuff vets have given us down the years never work. He is a pampered pooch, so our fault really. Only a few days a year, so no biggy.

I fully understand and I had 2 dogs at the time, one of whom hated any loud noise, including storms. They were in the living room away from it all with some some music on low and weren't bothered at all. Like I say, if you have the space and time to plan it's not a problem. Simply put, that year I did it because where I lived I could. I certainly wouldn't have considered it if I couldn't do things right to the letter.

A remote set up would not have pleased my father. 5th of November was the one night in the year he got to taste a little danger away from the factory floor! I don't know if you saw any of the video clips online but there was a firework craze here over the summer which was blamed on lockdown craziness. You can't buy fireworks in NY, but you can drive over to Pennsylvania and buy whatever you like and mate, some of the fireworks people were letting off in the street sounded like bombs.

Yeah there's a hell of a difference between those oiks setting the things off anywhere and a controlled environment! I wouldn't consider doing a display when I was on a housing estate either. Maybe the answer would be for people to have to purchase licences. That would at least solve a chunk of impulse buying maybe. Edit: and just to add, those flares are display stuff aren't they? It's insane that anyone unlicensed can just lay their hands on those. [Post edited 5 Nov 2020 19:02]

Currently sat next to a terrified dog, trying to keep her calm. The week either side of fireworks nights is shÃt. I wouldn't mind if they were the silent ones.

My dog is scared stiff of them and is currently in a state of distress. One specified night a year and only organised displays.
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

What if the person with the fireworks lives in the middle of nowhere and is upsetting no one? Asking for a friend. [Post edited 5 Nov 2020 19:38]

I think most people would be fine with people doing it in the countryside, or fields etc. But when you're on a housing estate it's a good two weeks every single night. I'll be honest though, I don't really enjoy fireworks outside of the large displays so I'm biased anyway. I do know that people enjoy then and don't want to take away that enjoyment. Just wish people were more considerate of others when deciding where and when they should do it.

I hate it when the things are going off randomly around me all week as some of the tw*ts seem to where I live right now. Only reason they haven't this year is because of the obvious, so it's been reserved for just a few tonight. I suppose I've stated my case because I feel it's unfair to assume everyone approaches them in the same way. I couldn't agree more about the built-up area argument. Like I say, l'd have no issue with licencing, which I'm sure would cut out a lot of the nuisance.

Someone in the middle of nowhere wouldn't be upsetting your dog! That aside, I hope he's ok. I love dogs so you know.
