Then why do people mock my leather gloves? It's not fair. Although I have the best taste in trainers judging by years of TWTDing.

A better time (for football at least) I suspect, when people went only to be entertained and support the team. None of the more recent pathetic, tribal macho bollox trying to wind up the opposition fans.

World War 1 had just finished, the world had been at war leading to the death of 10's of millions of people. ...in that scenario, I doubt you get too wound up by football when you have been through what those guys probably had. [Post edited 10 Mar 2021 20:37]

That'll be part of the background, but there's got to be more to it than that. The social conditions for a start. My old fella used to work the night shift down the pit, take the bus home, get washed, grab some food and then take the bus to Birmingham just in time to watch the Villa. I bet he didn't have the energy to be an idiot. From what I've heard the tribalism didn't exist throughout the mid-Twentieth Century right up until the 70s. People even used to go and support neighbouring clubs on alternate weekends when they were playing at home. That would very, very rarely happen now. I've done that in various places I've lived, but I've ever met anyone else who does. Well before my time though, so I could be wrong. It'd be interesting to know what things were like in Sir Alf's time as we've got a few posters who were watching then. [Post edited 10 Mar 2021 20:55]

There was at least one poster on here (some time back I believe) who said they has STs for Town and Col U as most of the fixtures were reversed (them away when we were at home). I seem to recall being told by someone that they, or a relative, held STs for Town and N*****h for the same reason.

I've met a few down here who used to do Swansea and Cardiff. There's no way anyone would do that these days. My old fella did Villa and B'ham, which i suspect is similar.
