Jessie Lingard 13:10 - Jun 2 with 1289 viewsOwainG1992

Sorry if it's been mentioned.
But I feel he's been most harshly done by.
There's gonna be a lot of square pegs in round holes i feel.
Here's hoping all the home nations can do as well as possible!

Poll: Apologies I'm bored. How many signings will we have by Plymouth at home.

I think I'm in the minority that can't see why everyone is so bothered about him not being picked.

He did nothing for two years during the qualification process, did well when he first joined West Ham and then didn't score in the last 6 games of the season so he's hardly in dazzling form like he was.

Ward-Prowse is the one I would've taken instead of one of the right backs.

He is deadly on set pieces which could've been a great asset if we really needed a goal.

Poll: Do you think we have a stronger squad this season or last season?

Nah, Lingard shouldn’t have gone. Had a purple patch with West Ham but Mount and Foden are miles ahead of him. I’d have even had Maddison ahead of Lingard.

He will get over it so don’t worry.

Apart from Wales and Scotland, obviously.

He might well still go anyway, given someone is bound to get crocked in one of these next 2 matches.

I thought James Ward-Prowse was the unlucky one, he has performed consistently over the last 3 -4 seasons in what is an average Southampton team. Has the energy, tackling ability and a regular goal scorer which a midfielder needs plus he's a dead-ball specialist and that is often the key to winning at international level.

At least one if not 2 of those right backs are going to be played out of position- Walker in a 3 at the back and/or TAA in midfield

Ward-Prowse is quality and I'd much rather watch him than someone like Henderson, but I suppose the likes of him and Rice are established players now and JWP would struggle to start.

You're 100% right on set pieces.

Seen a few people mention TAA as possibly being used in midfield.. which makes absolutely zero sense (this isn’t a slight on the poster, more an observation of the others who mention the merits of it)

A player who hasn’t played that role at club level should in no way be used in the national team in that position.. we have enough good players to not be taking risks and putting square pegs in round holes.. the thought of a players first competitive outing in an unknown position being against international level players has been done before and Southgate is (hopefully) too sensible for that

Also the argument he’s in for his crossing / dead ball ability also falls flat as Trippier, Mount, Kane etc. Would be ahead for free kicks/ corners and JWP is arguably the best dead ball specialist in the 26

Playing a defender in midfield Crazy
You would have thought Southgate would know that
I remember when England played Southgate in midfield

Not the same though is it? Lingard has done nothing for the past few seasons apart from a 10(ish) game purple patch on loan.

When Southgate took over, he said players wouldn't be picked on reputation, but form. No way are Henderson or Grealish in form.
