Throw-ins 16:11 - Aug 16 with 1502 views | Sharkey | Throw-ins will probably be topical tomorrow. I have a pal who is adamant that all the monster throws are foul throws because (he says) the hands should be either side of the ball rather than behind it, in which case sending it so far must be impossible. I went to check the laws and found nothing to support him on this. https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11 However, while I was there I was suprised by this: "At the moment of delivering the ball, the thrower must [...] have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline." To me this means you could have your toes eight inches onto the pitch as long as your heels were grounded. (I appreciate the heels usually are NOT grounded, bu sometimes you see a player very casually take a throw entirely flat-footed.) Is this correct?

We were talking of the most typical 'Ipswich' things yesterday. Surely having a long-throw specialist who posed almost zero goal threat has to be right up there!

Didn't we conceded directly as a result of a Knudsen "long throw" Bring back Rory Dewlap.....he knew how to chuck a ball

Amazing the number of players and linos who didn't know that. Also, I am very much of the opinion that is should be 'throws-in' along the lines of 'cups of tea' as opposed to 'cup of teas', but then I am a bsy cnt when it comes to grandma.

If you take a run up, quite probably and wouldn’t be legal. But if you’re standing still then unlikely.

Once teams catch on to this, it is going to be like the corners and the quadrants thing isn't it? Everyone will be making sure they are doing it to gain those critical extra few centimetres that actually make no difference. It was interesting watching one of the penalty shoot-outs the other night and some players placing the ball right at the front so only a small part overhung the spot while others placed it right on the spot. Presumably ensuring it is on a decent bit of ground is far more important there than whether it is a few centimetres closer to the goal!

It’s not a new law, it’s been this way for as long as I can remember (the wording was the same in 2002, which is the earliest Laws of the Game I can lay my hands on) [Post edited 16 Aug 2021 21:38]

Same as the corner quadrant rule. And yet there suddenly came a point where everyone is doing it.

Do you pine for the days when all the kicks-off were at 3 pm on a Saturday?
Throw-ins on 21:59 - Aug 16 with 795 views | MerseyBlue | Pretty concerned about Ben Tozer's long throws, assuming he is fit. He caused Man City problems in the cup so can't see our defence coping particularly well with that...
