Although he's p1ssed me off over the last few years I can't sop admiring him - I still prefer Roger but I just think this track is amazing. The way it hits you 1/3 of the way through is genius - IMHO

Yes, Jeff Lynne is well and truly up there for me. I was lucky to see the Out of The Blue gig in the late 70s, spaceship and all and it was something else. Talent wise? Early Elton John stuff takes some beating, Freddie Mercury, obviously, Pink Floyd, Clapton, Genesis up to about 1980 and the early front man Gabriel, who is extraordinary, so he’s my choice for tonight!
There are so many!

this is what jeff had to say about him.
Genius is an over-used word, but Roy is a real genius,” said Jeff afterwards. “It was Roy who came up with the idea of putting a cello on ELO's first single, 10538 Overture. Before that there weren't any strings. “And that was despite the fact that he couldn't really play the thing, and I can't read music.14 Mar 2014

I was a massive Dire Straits fan when I was a kid. But didn't really "get" Mark Knopfer's solo stuff as an adult.
I liked 1 or 2 songs like Cannibals, but in lockdowns I discovered some absolute gems of albums. My favourite solo album being privateering. He writes in multiple musical genres and floats between them with ease. I haven't even got to his guitar playing.

If you're talking pure musical talent, in terms of abilities both to compose and to play instruments, the answer's already been given, it's Mike Oldfield. He was 19 when Tubular Bells was recorded...
Kate Bush was another teenage talent having come up with much of her first album before leaving school...
Finally, an honourable mention has to go to Macca, proficient on bass / lead guitars, piano and drums and another teenage prodigy, plus without argument the most successful composer still living.
Don't get me wrong, Jeff Lynne is brilliant, but in terms of "talent" which, at a genius level, tends to emerge in the teens, he's behind all those three above.

These are all brilliant musicians, composers and performers. A different era to most named so far but I think Ben Folds and Stuart Copeland worth at least honourable mentions for all round, multi-instrument and genre excellence.
It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
