Liverpool 63 games, Town 66 games 07:56 - May 29 with 1656 viewsDJR

Interesting to note that Town played 66 games in 80/81 despite getting knocked out of the League Cup in the Fourth Round and the FA Cup in the Semi-Final. This is in comparison to Liverpool this season who have reached all three finals and played 63 games. Just think what Ipswich might have achieved that season with a modern day-sized squad because it was clear that in the end they fell short due to the number of games, as well as limited back-up options.

Yes, we ran out of players and energy. The end of season results show that.

That small squad also had to play on strength sapping poor pitches, medical treatment consisting of a bucket and sponge and against opposition that were allowed to tackle.

Do you mean the 1980/81 season?

We did well coming second in the league to a great Liverpool side in 1981/82 season but I don't think we had the cup runs.

We reached the semi final of the League Cup, 5th Rd of the FA Cup and got kicked out first round of the UEFA Cup by Aberdeen. 12 cup games plus 42 league games. Liverpool were just better than us that season, sadly.

Terry Butcher played 64 games for Ipswich in 1980/81. The man is a legend.

Indeed he is, but Russell Osman played all 66.

[Edit]Sorry, was thinking of 80/81 not 81/82 as per OP.[/Edit]

Liverpool were 11th with only 6 wins on New Years Day. But they'd only just integrated Ronnie Whelan, Bruce Grobbelaar, Mark Lawrenson and Ian Rush into the side. Once they got going, they were unstoppable.

I was at the game with my misses’ cousin, a big Leicester supporter. He was disappointed as we won the game a lot more comfortably than the 1-0 score suggested. We didn’t miss Arnold that day.

I was there too, behind the goal where Warky scored with a diving header-very near the end of the game as I remember it.

Diving header across the keeper, as I remember it. We were at the back of the lower section of the main stand in line with Wark. Boom, game over.

Other teams would have been in a similar position so all relative?

Did other clubs have bigger squads at all?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Not in 1980/81. In their 46 games Villa used just 14 players. They were a fit side, but but the stars sort of aligned for them that season. Just as Liverpool deserved the title in 82, showing they were a better team with a W2, L1, D1 record against us, we beat Villa 3 times in 80/81 and deserved to do so. It was a privilege to see us play. What a team.

In 81/82, I don’t think there was a huge difference in numbers between Ipswich and Liverpool’s squads, but if memory serves me right, there was in quality, beyond the first 12 or 13. There tended to be a fair few younger players like Yallop, Steggles, Gernon, Kinsella and D’Avray to name five. Some went on to have decent careers but none were the quality of the first 11.

Yes, I meant 80/81. Sadly the passage of over 40 years has played tricks with my mind. I've edited the OP to avoid further confusion.

Whatever era, we would always have struggled against Liverpool in terms of strength in depth. But Villa were nothing special, and with just slight greater strength in depth, I am sure we would have won the League that season. As you say, what a team. I remember reading a fantastic article about the 80/81 team in (I think the Guardian), which described them as probably the best team of the past few years in terms of playing style, but sadly I didn't keep it, and as there was no internet in those days, I can't trace it.
