Writing 08:52 - Jun 10 with 1183 views | unbelievablue | I've recently got back into writing, which, for a few years, has been my greatest ally in my fight against depression, anxiety, addiction and a myriad of other 'I won't bore you with the details' issues. Does anyone else blog or write for the same reason? There's something extremely cathartic about it, even if you aren't writing specifically about the aforementioned struggles, I find. If anyone is remotely interested, I penned this earlier this week - http://batflipsandnerds.com/2022/06/10/remembering-roger-angell-a-tribute-to-a-l

Writing on 11:12 - Jun 10 with 1042 views | Ryorry | Superb piece of writing 👠(and I'm quite a critical reader!) I've not read anything else that's been written about Roger Angell, but you're too modest imho - don't put yourself down in your writing by comparing yourself with other authors on the subject.

Thanks a lot. It's the fact I never met or corresponded with him that made me discuss him in those terms. The personal stories other people have in their back pockets really elevated their obits.

Slightly relevantly my son, who knows about these matters says that the quality of the literature produced about baseball over a long period of time may be the best of any sport. He reckons that only cricket comes anywhere near it.

Writing on 12:30 - Jun 10 with 990 views | Illinoisblue | Excellent piece, nicely done. I fell in love with baseball when I first moved here, fascinated by the stats and the history and the accepted insanity of a 162 game season. Now. the shine has gone. Partly because I watch less TV generally and more importantly getting rid of cable for YouTube TV means I can’t watch local games. But more than that, it’s that the game is so slow. I mean it always has been slow but after watching my kids playing so much footy and basketball for the last few years whenever I do catch a baseball game I’m always thinking “I can’t commit to three hours of this, just can’t do it.”

Unfortunately, in my experience, that gets a little watered down and other anxieties come in when it’s your job. But it becomes a passion and a pain when you become invested in it. Not to put you off because I think you’re easily good enough to write professionally. Your article was very personal and informed yet still pitched to a reader, giving them the details and insights to get into the article and want to read more. But I think the way you structured it was the most impressive. Putting all that together in a structure and flow for the reader (especially because it’s so personal) is the hardest part and you nailed it. Very nice work!

I concur. There is something deeply and inextricably woven into the fabric of the game which lends itself to particularly good writing (in my humble opinion). It also certainly helps that some of America's greatest writers have turned their hands to baseball at various points including, notably, Hemingway.

Slow is good. Interminable is not. The game is close to being broken. I live in vain hope that progressive rule changes will help.

Thanks, that's very kind. Structure is the thing I struggle with the most, usually. This just seemed to fall in place.

No problem – it was great! Yeah, structure is always tricky. The shortcut is a theme that helps the content fall into place but that can seem a bit forced sometimes. A structure where you take the reader by the hand and go with the flow is much more difficult but always looks good when done well.

They need to blow the game up to save themselves. 30 MLB teams… make it one country-wide league - they call it the national pastime after all - where each team plays the other twice at home and twice away. No more of the Cubs playing the Pirates 17 times a season. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Expand into states with no teams, make the playoffs bigger to compensate for the shorter season.

I would be fine with that, even as somewhat of a traditionalist. They've changed the format for this year somewhat so that there are more inter-league games. As always, half-measures.
