A Taste From My Childhood . 14:19 - Jun 22 with 1209 viewsStochesStotasBlewe

While toiling in the afternoon heat, was offered a cold drink and a bit of shade. Delighted to be offered dandelion and burdock and/ or Vimto.
Not had either of those for donkeys years and an iced jug of each was kindly served up.
Taste buds are on overload. All that is missing are some Smiths crisps with the little blue salt shaker bag.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Vimto is an anagram of vomit, and tastes similar! :o)

Not sure I've ever had a Vimto.

Is it like Tizer? I like Tizer.

I also used to like those Lager and Lime things that contained no lager - Top Deck??

Swear to god I'd love one right now.

Vimto is wicked. The goto "just stay in the car for a bit while I have a couple of quick pints lad" offering.

Vimto, cordial or fizzy, is a bit like, well Vimto. You’ll like Vimto.

We were reminiscing about those lager and lime thingies and also the shandy cans with no beer in earlier. Shandy Bass?

I never liked the shandy things.

I remember when I was a lad I was allowed a can of lager and lime thingy and a bag of crisps on a Saturday evening.

Fast forward I have my grandchildren living me at the moment along with daughter and scum in law - and RKD - and Mother ---- anyhoo, everyone is continually drinking cans of coke and eating crisps and sh1t.

Austerity???

Did the dandelion and burdock make you wee?

Asking for a friend and all that.

I’ve never had Dandelion & Burdock, but I have had Vimto. Up there with Irn-bru in the world of ghastly.

Now, the taste of yoof was Corona Ice Cream Soda. Drink of the gods - and you got money back (3d) on the bottle!

Smiths crisps with the blue bag were good, but first choice was always Golden Wonder for me.

Vimto is a taste sensation.

However...
I remember a 5 a side tournament when I was about 8, started to feel poorly just as it finished.
Some kind soul gave me a can of Dr Pepper for my journey home. The resulting sickness bug was just carrots and sweetcorn in a Dr Pepper scented gravy.
Haven't been able to stomach the smell of Dr Pepper ever since.

Is Dr Pepper like root beer? I kind of thought it was so I always stayed away.

When I was a kid I was in America and a family friend gave me a drink in a paper cup the size of a dustbin. I was as thrirsty as hell and it was boiling hot so i drank as much as I could get down me in one go. Turns out it was root beer (which I had never heard of before) and I think i must have turned instantly green.

Shocking stuff.

I think it's a vanilla flavour.
Ive avoided it for 40 years so can't be too specific.
I know the smell if anyone opens a can.

It's just below beetroot and just above salad cream on my list of items that will never again cross my lips.

Used to able to get Dr. Peppers on draught in Woolworths but only other place you could get it was if you knew someone on Bentwaters. As eleven year olds we would go swimming at St Matthews, then drink a couple of Dr Peppers in Woolies before cycling home across Christchurch Park spectacularly burping. Happy days.

[edit] Apologies, I misremembered, it was Seven-up on tap in Woolworths.

Sarsaparilla is like root beer.

We didn't have sarsaparilla at home but when I was little we used to visit northern relatives and they often had it. Tastes of liquorice, absolutely foul but my brothers liked it.
