this can't keep happening. We have to hope and pray for a mild winter. Scary stuff. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62123691

Utterly wrong of course, but I don't see why it won't continue. The big energy companies have managed to wangle record profits out of this and kill off some of the competition. Why not think they can get more? Nobody's reigning in their business model and we consumers will cut back on everything else (except food) before cutting fuel to keep warm and have hot water. They know they can squeeze us. The Energy Levy slightly redresses the balance, but is only skimming off the top of the profits and isn't going to offset the increase in costs for consumers.

Hope this doesn’t come across in the wrong way but it’s well worth purchasing a single warm duvet and cheap duvet cover set for staying warm. That’s what I did last year, not because of bills, but because I just enjoy it. This year though might be more of a necessity.

Some decent slippers, blankets and a few duvets would be a good investment for a lot of people. Oh and a dressing gown.

Truly impaired.

We could always tell capitalism to go fk itself, and take control of national infrastructure on behalf of the people. (I know that doesn't solve the problem, but we should do it anyway.)

I'm going to cover myself in goose fat and sit in the fireplace. I know what you are saying though. The problem is that a family already on, or below, the breadline, cannot afford those extra things.

You do realise that some economists are forecasting $300 a barrel for oil? It's currently circa $106 per barrel. If Putin closes down the gas pipelines, people wont need the weather as an excuse not to go to work.

Yea I get that but in an emergency those items would be a better buy.

Also for those who can afford it, get them now before they disappear from the shelves.

Doesn't come across wrong to me. Very sensible for those who can (a duvet from the market is only a tenner, so within reach of many I'd have thought). Even turning the thermostat down a degree and shaving minutes off each day will help some; and we should be doing that anyway to minimise energy usage. Harder for those in badly insulated houses or the very poor, older/vulnerable of course.

It's the people who wang on about having to scrape ice off their windows when they were kids that drive me nuts. Yeah, great for them. They didn't have heating then. We do now.

What are you talking about?

Growing up as a child with a single mum on income support we had central heating but couldn’t afford to run it. We just used one gas fire and I regularly remember waking up ice on windows seeing my own breath.

I remember what that was like and I’m incredibly sad that this is going to become a widespread thing for so many children again this winter :(

I’m on about people who say ‘suck it up, it was far worse when I was younger and we never moaned about it’. People lacking the empathy you’ve shown in your last paragraph, who look back on poverty and hardship as though they were the golden years, just to score points today. There was a rash off them on social media when the fuel price rises were announced. I suspect we’ll see more of it.

Some of the kids in my class at school lived in caravans at the caravan park near Felixstowe Beach railway station on Walton ave. I'm sure they could beat anybodys story of how cold it was growing up.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Stopping paying the bills might change their business model.

AH ok, got ya.

Why anyone would want to point score over such a thing is horrendous. The world is in a dangerous place economically (look what's been happening in Sri Lanka) and things are going to get very bad in this country i fear.

We haven't seen anything yet, some people are still on fixed tariffs, they are going to have an almighty shock this winter when those deals run out.

To quote Martin Lewis:
It is Ofgem who sets the price cap (which is now really a price floor) based on wholesale prices and the requirement to hedge to have forward supply.

The big profits aren't being made by retail energy suppliers, but by oil & gas producers (tho sometimes they're the same firms)

A lot of the suppliers (not producers) are supplying to residential customers at a loss
