John Arlott - Sorry this is random but on 13:42 - Sep 6 with 1653 views | solemio | Wonderful - unsurprisingly. At times his commentaries were almost poetic, but not at the expense of keeping you up to date with what was going on.

I frequently walk past his erstwhile home and his voice just pops into my head every time. It's an idyllic place, too... https://goo.gl/maps/QZyWjTg7swA5XPgv7

That last one is it the Kynaston one? In which case it is presumably well worth reading. Arlott was before my time but clearly a great broadcaster, so much better than the upper-class tediousness of Johnners and Blowers.

If you can find a copy of Gone With the Cricketers by Arlott, snap it up. It was his very good book on the 1948/49 England tour of South Africa, and contains his first thoughts, very prescient, on the horrible inhuman politics of the National Party as they codified apartheid. (The first apartheid law was the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act, 1949) | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Just had a count up and I have 10 books on cricket tours written by John Arlott (including the one you mention) covering the period 1946 to 1972.

He lived in Alderney. A close friend of mine was his accountant. The lunches they had were apparently folkloric. His wine cellar was enormous. Don’t know what happened to it when he died. In the 70s and on to the the early 80s The Guardian had by far the best two sports journalists in Arlott and Frank Keating. [Post edited 6 Sep 2022 15:56]

John Arlott was covering England's tour of South Africa in 1948-49 & he was filling in his leaving form. Arlott left the section marked "Race" blank. The immigration officer asked him "what race are you"? "human" Arlott replied. "Get out" replied the officer, through gritted teeth. Arlott was also a vehement opponent of the ill fated 1970 Springbok Tour to England & had already said that he would refuse to commentate on it.

Also he was involved in getting Basil D'Oliveira over here and into English cricket.

As I seem to remember was Clement Freud. You got a better class of hack in those days

Clement Freud began his journalistic career as a match reporter for the Observer in the late 1950s, so it is entirely likely that he would have been at Portman Road.

Agreed Freud was a very talented journalist, but Jimmy Savile was also a half decent disc jockey.

He also had a very pleasant home in the lovely Hampshire village/town of Alresford, also in Hants. A good place if you like steam railways too.

Ah yes, the terminus of the "Watercress line". Took the kids on it a couple of times when we used to live in Hampshire in the mid 1990s.

Yes, I've got a friend who is a volunteer worker on the Watercress, so was lucky enough to get a short footplate trip. It was only after my first trip on that line that I realised what a scenic county Hampshire is.
