The way we play 12:44 - Sep 14 with 1795 viewsDyland

We're going to lose or draw some games against the better sides cos there will be mistakes that will cost us. But I can't see us changing the way we play against Owls, Pompey, etc. I kept hearing shouts of "sloppy" last night, not especially negative more observational. Well yes, if we were never guilty of sloppiness this lot would be in a higher league already. Let's stay calm when we concede and if we lose/draw, even due to mistakes from adventurous play or momentary lapses in concentration. This squad is still improving and it's a long old season.

Some of the open play in the first half last night was breathtaking. The best seen at PR in a very long time. No hyperbole. I knew a few neutral corporate guests there last night who support the bigger PL boys and they were impressed and quite gushing. Yes yes, we didn't turn the screw... but as I say, they are still growing as a group.

I'm daring to believe.... but this IS Town innit :)

There’s a large element of risk-taking in how we play. And it seems to be encouraged – even when simpler passes or not trying to beat another defender seem better options.

I think that McKenna is encouraging that freedom (and the ability to make mistakes) to get us playing the right way. But wouldn’t surprise me if we naturally tighten up against more threatening opposition and in tighter games.

Will be interesting to see what we do against Sheffield Weds. Whether it’ll be as fast and occasionally loose as last night or whether we are a little more careful about trying to pick them off and not going quite as gung ho for 90 minutes.

It was interesting hearing both McKenna and Walton explain why they play like that and how effective it is when it pays off.

I'm less anxious about these 'big' games than I am about some of the lesser lights tbh. The lesser lights will try and disrupt, time waste and sh1thouse - the 'big' teams may well actually have a go, which might work well for us.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

all about little pockets of space

Play the ball around the back, they press, we pass around it into the exposed spaces and attack.

a niche perspective

We seem to always have an out ball. They are so well drilled and everyone knows where they need to be in each pattern of play. For so many years we've been beaten by sides that were simply better coached than us. We are now better coached than everyone we play AND we have better players. A good mix!

I don't think we have much to fear on Saturday. It'll be a more open game than we've largely had so far this season which plays into our hands.

I think this is where I'm at too strangely less worried about the bigger sides. Bigger sides will try and play which will give us more space which could play to our strengths.

Agreed - I said to a mate on the way out I could see Walton's risks being exposed in the Championship and he quite rightly said "Let's worry about getting there first!"

But yeah it is great to watch. It's pretty much the opposite of McCarthy-ball, albeit in a lower division.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Sheff Weds will be our toughest test so far, and as you say, also an intriguing one as to how McKenna will play it. Just bulldozing and bamboozling the smaller teams is one thing - this will be a real test of his tactical abilities. We'll know a lot about McKenna and this team after these next 3 games. If we come out of them relatively unscathed then I think we really can start to believe.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

It could - but it could also expose our weaknesses too.

Not only are we fitter than most other teams but our style of play forces our opponents into lots of running and will wear them out in the second half.

They had 5 men running around pressing depp in our half and as soon as that press was broken not only do we have a lot of space to break into but their front 5 now has to sprint back 40 yards to get back behind the ball. We must be a nightmare to play against.

I think on occasion some of the risky stuff we do in and around our own box will be punished.

At times it gives my bumhole a right scare.

That said, isn't it so nice to be sat in the pub or wherever pre-match and confidently be able to talk about how we're likely to win or at the very least compete?!

THIS IS DEMOC-RRRRRRR-ACY MANIFEST!

I don't disagree but it'll be an exciting watch either way!

I love our passing game. Even when we are not completely penetrating. The opposition is still having to move around and chase the ball. Which, as we've seen in most games. Takes a physical toll on them. And we have the luxury of decent quality reserves to bring on and up the tempo in the last 15-20 minutes.
With Evans and Walton, spraying the odd long one. It gives us the more direct option, too. It's fascinating to watch..
The two red cards were not a fluke, imo. Their CB's were knackered, lost concentration, made mistakes, and got caught out trying to rectify them.
It's hearts in mouths stuff at times, playing across the back line. Especially against a high press. But I just keep reminding myself of the number of clean sheets we've kept. And the brilliance of our keeper. And the fact that we are in League 1. And even if we give the ball away, it's not a definite goal conceded at this level. Strikers make mistakes , too..
We may well concede a sloppy one at some point . And when it happens, it will look awful. But I'm all for the way we play. There are more pros than cons. As we are showing.
I don't fear anyone in this division, home or away. I feel like we've been in cruise mode and can up it, further in the big games. That's not to say I think we'll beat everyone. I just don't think we need to fear anyone.. We are actually a nightmare to play against. Let them worry about us..

Agreed. Note of caution though, bigger tests coming up thick and fast and you can bet your life we'll be punished by Owls and Pilgrims and Pompey if we frig around and lose concentration. But we can score, so meh...

Deffo some tougher fixtures coming up. But a really good chance to put some daylight between us and them. They are all winnable and all losable. But, if I'm honest, I think we can go into all those games with confidence.
Weds away last season, we had a scratch midfield and could have got something from that one.
Plymouth away, we should have won that under Cook. Penney had a poor game and we missed chances.
Not bothered about Pompey at home. Honestly think we'll do them by at least 2 goals. If we have a full squad.
I think we can win all of those.. But I'd take 5 points unbeaten across the three..
It's so exciting going into these big games full of confidence. Lets hope it stays that way for the whole season.
