Chronic tension headaches and tight neck/shoulders, HALP. 16:08 - Sep 18 with 4466 views | monytowbray | At my wit’s end with it. Missed Tuesday night because of it and it’s been hammering my quality of life/sleep for months. Have managed it okay for the last ten years with the odd flare up but seems to be worse more days than okay now .(

I do have a neck hot water bottle. It helps short term but really could just do with knowing I will wake up most days and not be knackered before my feet touch the floor :(

Have you spoken to a doctor? Could be a number of causes and you should at least get some tests done. Hope it improves

Did all that about ten years ago. Had a CAT scan and its all muscle related. Had a 4 vial blood test recently too for something unrelated and all came back fine. I did come off My SSRIs in Spring and I have been fairly low most of Summer so gonna go back on them and see if MH improvements lead to less stress and therefore less tension.

Know anyone with a TENS you could try out?

Googled it, if not for being on the NHS site I’d have looked at something like that and assumed psuedo nonsense! You had experience with ‘em? Assuming they help?

TENS machines do work, but it depends on how severe your pain is. When the ex-mrs was in labour, I accidentally leaned on the TENS and ramped it up to ‘uncontrollable muscle vibes’; probably the beginning of the end. Have you tried a chiropractor or osteopath? That said my dad had some awful work injuries cured by acupuncture and swears by it now

That was the cause of tension headaches I was getting. Not had any issues since given meds.

I have one yes, supplied by the Pain Clinic so they use them. It is useful I can say, but obviously cannot recommend for you because your problem is too different to mine. Which is why I wondered if you could try one out before buying one and finding it ineffective for you. My sister was on about some other device that pulses ultrasonic waves rather than the TENS which simply delivers an electric current. She reckon that's helpful even if it does freak out the dog. Edit: I also receive Lidocaine (local anaesthetic) patches but that's via prescription so don't know if you can obtain those maybe. Again, my issue is nerve damage so very different but I have given one or two away and they are apparently effective on muscle pain too. Edit edit: Do check before using a TENS, only because of this: "The electrodes should never be placed on the eyelids, on the heart, on the neck, or in the mouth." You'd assume the rest is obvious but the neck? I can't think of any reason not to use it on the back of the neck but if they say so then guess it needs to be checked out. https://tensmachineuk.com/tens-and-muscle-stimulation/tens-machines.html?urm_cam [Post edited 18 Sep 2022 19:09]

If you attach them under your testes just to see what happens I can qualify it's about as painful as you'd imagine it to be.

A lot of that advice is based on catch all safety advice. You’re not meant to take Codeine long term but I’ve had doctors tell me if it helps the pain do it with caution.

Chiropractor is on my list, had acupuncture once for a shoulder injury and it is good. Osteopath I did about ten years ago and short term it helped, long term the issues persisted. Mine was a Norwich supporter too, wish I knew before he touched me!

Chronic tension headaches and tight neck/shoulders, HALP. on 20:04 - Sep 18 with 2670 views | fabian_illness | Just as a word of warning, I used a chiropractor for back problems but unfortunately lost faith. Wouldn't ever use one again. I've improved my back through physio and they also recommended massage which helped more than I thought it would. Hope you find something that works for you mate.

Sports massage used to do the job but recently it’s not. Although this eve I’ve done some self-massaging on pressure points on my SCM (from corner of jaw to collar bone) and jesus it’s sore/tight. Problem with this stuff is one thing goes and then over time that overcompensation messes with everything.

A good quality chair is also important if you are sitting at a PC for long periods as is making sure the monitor is at the correct height, that especially can caused neck and shoulder issues. Plus as you say exercising, although simply stepping away from the PC every 30 mins for a short walk is excellent at reducing the strain on your head PCs can generate.

He does? I though he lived for sorting out squabbles on here. I can’t imagine he’s got much else to do. Gav’s got it all ticking over quite nicely and we all know our overlord is a hamster.

If it’s muscle related, have you tried sports massage? I’ve struggled with posture related upper back/shoulder/neck pain, and massage is the mutts nuts for it. I’m not getting the constant headaches though, so could be a different situation. Best to consult your GP I’d have though.
