Atmosphere yesterday 06:16 - Oct 16 with 2150 viewspennblue

For such a big crowd, the atmosphere was dead in the 1st half.

Always seems to be the case when we get big crowds.

But genuine question, when the team are not 'on it', we need to be, that IS what home advantage should be.

So I guess the question is how to initiate more noise / crowd activity when there is not much to shout about?

We do need to be that 12th man.

I was hungover yesterday, the whole team and crowd felt the same first half!

The atmosphere matches exactly what happens on the pitch. It’s hard to get excited watching a slow chess game.

Totally different as soon as the subs were made and we ran at them with pace, and made them commit .

….was outsung by about 50 Lincoln kids who’d had a packet of Haribo each.

It’s not the first time either.

Pompey was pretty much full house, but that was a cracking atmosphere so I’m not sure that’s relevant. I’d go as far as saying one of the best atmospheres at PR in years.

It’s pretty much because the players spent the first 35 mins casually ambling around the field and passing back to Walton, rather than taking the game to Lincoln. Not a lot to get excited about - just frustrating. McKenna even said the same, didn’t sound like it was in his game plan so I’m not sure what went wrong.

I think they should rename that stand The Library. Over the years I’ve sat in every stand bar the Cobbold, and the SAR was by fa4 the worst. I decided to return to my roots in the “North Stand”, and haven’t regretted it one bit.

The crowd mirrors the pitch, when the team are flat (as we were all first half) then the crowd struggle to get going.

Shocking in alf Ramsey upper, but to be fair the north stand is split In two, you can hear two Different chants at times or one side starts to sing, and the other side starts to sing the same song half way through..

I agree that is what happens, but I think that is when the crowd needs to lift the team, not the other way round. Then we can be far more effective.

But this can only really happen if it is orchestrated (by a group like Blue Action)

Which is what we try and do at every game, but most of those around us just don’t respond to it. We sing the easy songs that everyone can join in with to build an atmosphere around the ground, but they still don’t bother.

Folk can talk about drums, acoustics etc all they want, but the fact is most Ipswich fans simply can’t be arsed.

Agree with the split crowd problem.
SBR is like two different crowds/songs at times.

Saw Brentford on Friday and they sound much louder and coordinated with 10k less people mainly because their 'noisy' stand is one tier.

Sadly I can't see anything ITFC can do about it. You would have to knock down SBR and replace it with a one tier stand which financially would not be worth it.

On getting all stands to sing I still reckon its worth a shot bringing back Ipswich to the tune of amazing grace. (via Blue Action maybe???),
All stands used to sing it and it was always by far the loudest song at Portman Road because of that.

Good work, as ever. I think the NS atmosphere has improved and responded well this season, but yesterday was odd; very lethargic in the first half, picked up 10m into the second when we started running at Lincoln a bit more (and when Kyle Edwards came on).

Like someone else said here, the Portsmouth match was good from start to finish. Maybe, like the team, we’re (Blue action excepted) a bit complacent and just expect the team to turn up and beat “lower” teams like Lincoln.

but comes back to the perennial debate about the design of the stand means everyone in the north stand who is singing, is singing at the upper tier, and the volume of sound never makes its way down the other end of the ground, whilst 50 fans in a completely open stand with a high roof will always sound louder.

…in a nutshell.

Having done my time in the North Stand, I now sit in Churchman’s and the sad fact is that 90% of the time you can barely hear the North Stand.

The problem is that those that do sing hugely overstate the actual amount of noise that they make, they think they are much louder than they actually are.

As you say the reasons aren’t over complicated, there simply isn’t enough people making a noise and the noise they do make isn’t particularly loud.

Fair play to you and yours for trying though.

Wouldn’t have happened in my day, etc, etc.

The loudest fans yesterday were the 20-30 outside the ground by the station singing cheerio to the Lincoln lot… didn’t get it really, after they just took all 3 points, must have been laughing their tits off at us.

‘Come on Ipswich’ is one of my favourite songs… and good at firing up the players but wasn’t heard till second half

Fans have to do more

Players need to start quicker

I think the issue has always been that the crowd need action on the pitch to respond to and get going. Bobby Robson criticised us for it and it seems never to have changed. A few times (e.g. local derbies) this is less so.

I don't think the issue is any worse (or better) dependent on the crowd size (although the Town away following is generally very vocal throughout matches).

Often said that the away team needs to quieten the home crowd at the beginning of the game. No need at PR on occasions when our patient/soporific (delete as appropriate) build up passing around without making forward progress does it for them.
