Whenever you get seduced by arguments for the death penalty think of Maurice Hastings:

'a request for DNA testing of the swab in 2000 was denied by the district attorney' - why would any DA do that ?

Incredible forgiveness in the former prisoner's words:

'"I prayed for many years that this day would come," the Associated Press quoted Mr Hastings as saying. "I am not pointing fingers; I am not standing up here a bitter man, but I just want to enjoy my life now while I have it."'

I don't think there are too many people in this country to be honest. With the exception of a few represented by the likes of Farrage. Most people in this country recognise the risk of a mistake.

Up until a child is killed, then even some normally sane people revert to 1930's Britain.

I think a lot of people have that flash of anger when something really horrible happens and would happily sentence someone to death in the moment. Give it a few hours and most people would accept that it's not a good idea.

Truly impaired.

But Rees-Mogg.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

I refer you to the words of Bronn from Game of Thrones.

Wow!

"prosecutors sought the death penalty."

It would have been more of a deterrent had they got that sentence too.

Actually I think the death penalty is less of a deterrent to the real psychopathic killers, those people probably have a death wish and that way the State gives them a sense of personal martyrdom on top of the release from a compromised life. But for people who have not committed any crime, like Maurice Hastings, long term incarceration or death are just irrational systems of regulation that have no bearing on the way we lead our lives.

It was a quote from Priti Patel. One of the most stupid things she has said. Ian Hislop tore it to pieces in typical fashion.

I think the argument put forward by those involved police, judges barristers etc is the most telling.

Bring back capital punishment in the UK and the risk would be in seeing those accused of murder ' getting away with it". As the thought is that no jurors would convict as they would have the possibility of a wrongful conviction on their minds. Which would see a massive increase in people opting for a murder charge rather than, one of manslaughter.

Even if convicted there would then follow long exhaustive appeals, which would if anything be an even greater strain on the victims family..

"it is a deterrent", claim the not too bright. Just as hanging for sheep stealing was a deterrent, once. Odd how there has not been a rise in sheep stealing since we stopped capital punishment.

Unfortunately there are certain politicians, shts in the media and elsewhere who fully know this but for their own personal gain will happily spout this - to gain popularity among the dim.

I trust better the words of those working in that sphere than ever some shytehawk with an O'level in rabble rousing. And besides, reasoned thought backs their views.

In conclusion, the real sentence is suffered by the victim's family. I lost a sibling when she was relatively young. That was due to an hereditary illness. I cannot begin to understand the grief felt my someone (parents)who has had a family member/friend murdered. It must be something which they carry with them to their grave.
