Many on here have commented on how the facade of control in China is very brittle. Amazing to theorise that the world cup is helping to draw attention to the bizarre COVID rules that remain in China to this day. Clearly a nation totally exhausted from autocratic rule.

I suspect this is the beginning of a something very important.

It is a massive country and ultimately rule of law depends on the support of sufficient of the populace.

However, this happened more than 33 years ago now and little as changed off the back of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Tiananmen_Square_protests_and_massacre

I am sure things will change sometime but not certain a single protest can be seen to be the turning point.

This does look like an uprising is forthcoming. Wow. How can you control 1 billion+ people.

I doubt it. China showed what happens in Hong Kong. It's hard for any public uprising when the police and military are loyal to the ruling powers.

There must be a tipping point, though. The fall of the iron curtain was a dramatic time. But, as I say above, China has ridden out protests before with no major change.

I was talking to someone yesterday about this - and we were discussing how another lockdown would work in the U.K.

Short answer, it wouldn’t

I didn't say that. I said they were seemingly exhausted from autocratic rule.....are you rebutting autocratic rule in China?

Some elements of that article imply the police's support is not as absolute as it appears. Again the facade of order and control is brittle.

200,000 people have fled HK. For what it's worth, that 2 part documentary by the BBC focusing on the Polytechnic University siege in November 2019 is incredibly harrowing viewing. Highly recommended.

The opposite. I'm pondering if lockdowns are autocratic.

Watched that the other day. Brutal. Fair play to the students for fighting back, but with hindsight, perhaps blockading yourself in the University wasn't the best idea.
