Nurses pay rises will be inflationary 13:33 - Dec 15 with 1180 viewsbluelagos

according to the Tory minister sent out this morning to defend the government's position of refusing to offer more than is currently on the table...

Can anyone explain how increasing public sector pay would increase inflation? When I worked for FMCG companies I was quite closely involved in product pricing decisions, and we never once looked at the level of nurses pay when setting our annual price reviews...

Anyone?

The answer is it won’t be inflationary because it’s not being driven by consumption, but by commodity prices and China’s ludicrous zero covid policy.

Meanwhile interest rates have been quietly raised again and whilst this probably won’t impact UK inflation it does support Sterling falling further behind the strong dollar. The good news is that there are hopes that inflation in the US has now plateaued and further Fed rises may not be needed. This other major currencies should stabilise against the $.

Unless we start charging more for hospital treatment it should be fine.

What I really want to know though is when are the government proposing on increasing wages by more than the inflation rate so as we all catch up?

I believe their logic is that the NHS is the biggest employer in Europe. So giving that many people a 10% pay rise could actually fuel inflation. It does have some pub logic to it but it feels a bit Liz Truss school of economics.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

A couple of years ago it was clap the nurses. There was Boris looking all grateful after wheezing into his NHS oxygen mask from his NHS bed.

Now? Boooo. Blame the nurses and unions for inflation, global warming, England out of the World Cup, Russia’s war and that bloke being kicked off strictly.

All the unions are asking for is a decent living wage - which will be spent on the necessities of life in this country thus providing others with an income. The money won’t disappear abroad to tax havens like Johnson’s latest £1m earned or Sunak’s vast wealth.

The Unions are defending their members’ interests and rightly so. While I feel for people who don’t have representation (got the t shirt for that), it’s not a reason to block people that do (got the t shirt for that too). It shouldn’t be a race to the bottom.

There is not enough money to pay for services. Well get those who can afford it to pay more - especially those who caused it.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

I can't see how increasing nurses pay will make beans more expensive.

This. Plus if it’s ok for the energy companies, supermarkets and pretty much every other company to increase prices to cover rising costs, I don’t see why workers can’t raise their prices to cover their rising costs.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

And it does seem somewhat strange that this inflation is driven by a war, but the response hasn’t.

A proper Government would say, have an inflation equalling pay rise nurses, take that Putin, no one indirectly messes with U.K. civil servants.

Also the nurses and the unions know they won't get 19% but it's a starting point to work down from. The government though are trying to convince the public that its non negotiable to make the nurses look bad. On the radio this morning nearly everyone asked were behind the strike action. Not heard anything from the government about todays interest rate rise. Funny that.
