One record that looks as if it may be broken this season 11:03 - Mar 22 with 1443 viewsCopfordBlue

Is the highest points total of a league one team who didn’t go up. Sheffield United 2011/12 with 90 points. They finished third and lost in the play offs. They had 70 points after 37 games.

That must have been particularly galling for them as they finished one place behind Sheffield Wednesday. Quite remarkable that Stevenage finished in the play-offs that season - I think that was only their second season in the Football League?

Interesting to look at that table and see Notts County just missing out on the top six on goal difference, Brentford and Bournemouth sandwiching Colchester between 9th and 11th, Preston in 15th and a host of teams who have since dropped into non-League and returned (or not).

Tommy Miller, Alan Lee, Gary Roberts and Jordan Rhodes all took penalties for Huddersfield in their shoot-out win over Sheffield United at Wembley. Hopefully we don’t end up missing out on promotion this season in that fashion.

That was the season that Ched Evans went to prison. They were ahead of Wednesday beforehand, failed to win any of their last three games afterwards and ultimately missed out.

Since it is possible four teams will secure more than 90 points this season it is more than likely a new record will be set.

Yeah, Trequartista did some good analysis on all three EFL divisions since it switched from 2 points for a win.

NO TEAM EVER has scored two points per game and missed out on automatic promotion in the football league. I have checked every final table since 1981 when three points for a win was introduced. I think that's 123 league seasons.

The hardest league to get out of in modern English football league history.

Currently we have four teams on course for 92+.

The EFL might have an epiphany and say that 92+ points deserves a place in the Championship and all teams achieving this should get promoted. Pull the other one it's got bells on.

But knowing the EFL propensity for making stupid decisions, they will say that in the interests of fairness, NO teams should be promoted to the Championship this season.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?
