Bobby Gillespie. Massive socialist... on 10:34 - Jun 8 with 3490 views | WeWereZombies | Very interesting for me, having seen Primal Scream for the first time a couple of weeks ago (and now maybe wishing I had broken off from their set half an hour before the end and gone and got myself in a decent position to watch Public Service Broadcasting on another stage.) Important to remember that the son's statement is quite personal (understandably) and only one side of the story; and that Gillespie and Innes would not have been the only ones involved in decisions, the band's management team are probably as culpable as anyone in the apparent lack of support for Duffy.

They treated Denise Johnson poorly as well.

And The Jesus Ans Mary Chain told him he had to close down Primal Scream if he wanted to keep playing drums for them. Maybe not in the same league as demoting Duffy to a paid per gig touring member but worth remembering that just about everyone in the music business gets a bit cut throat at times; and most rock musicians have had their share of put downs.

There is also the aspect of Duffy having alcohol problems, which can be very destructive to personal relationships as well as working ones.

Didn't make it to BT this year, for a variety of reasons. Was it good?

A lot of his son's statement centres around him being a 'functional' alcoholic. In my experience, addicts of any shape are only 'functional' if their lives are highly and intricately structured and have people around them willing to accommodate their habits and any erratic behaviour associated. Taken out of that environment, then they can become unreliable and unpredictable very quickly. I wonder if the deterioration in his relations with his bandmates involved an element of that. The fact he was sent home from a tour suggests there was a significant breakdown in both ability to function and relations with the rest of the band. They may not have been close friends to start off with (as is often the case where a band's members work together without necessarily getting on personally). This doesn't detract from the tragedy of a man having lost his life. But it does provide context for the actions of his former associates.

Brian Jones, Syd Barrett, it's quite a long list. The pressure of being in a successful band is not easy to handle.

Getting to be one of those festivals I think about going to before I even know who is on the bill, and the change of 'owners' doesn't seem to have had a noticeable effect between this year and last (although the change of parking arrangements does, watch out for any festival with CTM in charge of those - didn't think getting out on Monday could be any worse than last year but it was, and how...) Of the bands I saw I didn't expect Echo and the Bunnymen to be my festival favourites but they were just wonderful. Had never heard of Opus Kink before but had them recommended to me as I thought about leaving the Woodland Stage and was glad I stayed, met a lot of people later who felt the same. Stick In The Wheel didn't get many watching them but those of us who did struck lucky. Vaigra Boys were disgusting, wonderfully so. The Beths slightly underwhelming but still glad I saw all their set. I tore myself away from Interpol to watch The Bunnymen but could tell I was getting sucked in, intense band. Pretenders were seasoned, reliable (except when Chrissie Hynde had to restart a number after Billy Gillespie had put her off from the wings, she was laughing) and great. Gary Numan was perfectly entertaining. The Men They couldn't Hang were straightforward and worth the time. I mentally reprimanded myself for going to see Dea Matrona for their looks but stayed because they rock. First time I have seen a full solo set from Billy Bragg and very good it was. Anna Calvi an hour later was different in terms of her guitar and vocal virtuosity but on a par in terms of enjoyment. Bands I went into late in the set, or went away from to catch something I had noticed from the bill, but wished I had seen all of it were Pale Blue Eyes, The Lovely Eggs and She Drew The Gun. The Doonicans were The Doonicans of course but walking away at the end I asked someone, who was also in a multicoloured tank top (no, I wasn't wearing one, I mean like them...) what was on the sheet of cardboard he had been holding up during their act and he showed me that it said 'Fúck Off Bjorn'. Under, light, questioning he revealed that he had been the one to teach him guitar and 'this is what he does with it!'

Good stuff. Saw Echo and the Bunnymen about 15 years ago at Glastonbury, were very good then, too. Would like to have caught Gary Newman, as never managed to do so yet. Is the parking in the same place, or have they moved it over the road again?

I managed to park in the staff car park (by mistake) to start off with and then let slip that I wasn't staff to a staff member (she did look sweet but silly me for trusting her to keep a confidence), she had been bemoaning the arrangements...and this was on Thursday night. So she moved me, ah the personal attention, further down the field over the road (which is where I parked last year.) Being on the same side of the road as the camping can have an advantage for unpacking and packing up but getting off site was a nightmare for everyone who didn't get up and going by seven on Monday morning. I also got told off for tiptoeing across a cattle grid and climbing over a five bar gate. My explanation that I live rural and as a country boy I have to do these things at least once a day received a poor response and I had to go up to the temporary traffic lights after that.
