Biggest season ahead in years for Ipswich....... on 09:53 - Jul 7 with 1008 views | the_toff | I thought last season was bigger. With the new owners and investment we were making I felt like we needed an immediate payback, to keep them invested, keep hold of the manager and top players and get the Americans all properly bought in. Missing out on promotion would've been a real sucker punch I think. This season feels like one of stabilisation and progression. I think we'll be pushing as much as we can for the playoffs and who knows how equipped we are until we get going, but I think a top half finish wouldn't be the end of the world. In that respect it's perhaps less pressure. I'm certainly looking forward to more challenging games. Being 4-0 up at half time against Morecambe with 80% possession is actually a bit tedious. Bring on Leeds, Southampton, Leicester, Boro, Norwich, West Brom, Watford etc.

Agreed. Last season was bigger. It was vital we got out of that quicksand league for all the reasons you’ve given. I never thought it’d be as difficult as it turned out to be. We can now hopefully progress. What that’ll look like, who knows but I like the approach that’s being taken. Equipping ourselves in the way we have in the last two seasons, player wise, means that we’ve something to build on rather than having to recruit a whole new team. With a no 9, an experienced centre half I reckon we could challenge for those playoffs. Sunderland did. Being more realistic, a top half finish would represent good progress. I guess by end of August, we’ll have some idea, but regardless, playing in a division with a lot of peer clubs is a lot less pressure than trying to win at places like Morecambe and Cambridge.

With a lot of good decisions and a little luck along the way hopefully all that happened between 2010 and 2020 will be minor blips on their otherwise solid club record. We are much better placed now to capitalise on sound investment than when ME took over.

Point of order. We didn't sack him. Evans wasn't going to renew his contract, and then he walked.

So by not giving a new contract, you're letting the manager go are you not?

I agree. Less pressure in terms of the brutal, relentless consistency you need in L1 as well. I would argue its a lot easier to stay in the Championship than get there. If you win 1, lose 1 through the season you're going to be somewhere around 8th or 9th. 1 ppg keeps you up. In last seasons L1 you needed 2.1ppg for 2nd, which is ridiculous really, regardless of the quality of opponent.
