Problem being it costs money to treat sewage. Nobody wants to pay higher water bills. And they have to make a profit for shareholders.

It's the second part that is the crux. With public ownership, all those profits would more than cover the cost of improving the system and removing the need to pump raw sewage into the rivers. From the article: "In the UK, 30% of people get sick after wild swimming" and "At the Sunderland triathlon in July, 88 competitors fell ill after competing ... the majority of sickness was caused by norovirus ... the water had tested safe on the day of competition and no sewage was released" so even on days when the sewage is not released. Still, it's the will of the people, what people voted for, would be undemocratic to go back to EU standards, etc.

You'd think people would find it odd not having strategic national infrastructure like water supplies under national control. But hey ho, flog anything for a quick buck.

Dŵr Cymru are not for profit, but they still have their issues (coastal pollution isn’t as bad I think(?), but there are problems with the rivers due to all the agricultural land). But still, your point holds that things are not right. A combination of money syphoned off for profits and/or not invested in future proofing infrastructure, toothless regulator, powerful polluter lobby groups, etc. Grim really that we are regressing after years of slowly starting to clean things up a bit.

It's good that they're not for profit but how big are they? How much of what you describe is their responsibility? Also, what do they actually mean by "not-for-profit"? Is it simply that they are using profits to invest in growing the business? A national utility across the UK would have no need to do that (in fact it would have no market to do so unless it was looking to move abroad).

Don't think where the companies are now in trashing the environment is about needing to pay higher bills, it's about the companies misspending the money we pay them every year for decades on either the wrong things or profit. ofwat set how much they can charge every one of us every 5 years to do the basics, then extra stuff. but companies been sweating their assets for decades and not using the customers money enough on the basics (capital maintenance of assets, planning and future proofing eg growth of population, climate change) and eventually it all builds up and up, and is now such a mess for most companies that's it's far to much to fix at pace (going to take decades for some tbh). Question is what on earth have companies been doing with all the money they ve been given by customers over the decades. Like anything you don't maintain properly, eventually it breaks and all goes wrong. Customers should not have to pay twice for this, should be shareholders footing this bill. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Good questions, although I don’t know many of the answers! They’re not the largest. Thames, South West and Anglia seem to get the biggest kicking from the EA, but Ofwat name Welsh Water as one of the worst 6 or 7. Trouble is Ofwat and especially the EA don’t have much clout (the EA not exactly covering itself in glory either). The ‘compensation’ delivered back to customers is peanuts compared to turnovers. There are calls from some quarters for the CEOs/Chairmen to face more strict penalties including potential jail for the worst repeated breaches, aren’t there? A bit of a slippery slope, but in extreme cases of wilful environmental damage maybe that’s what’s needed.

Water companies are taking the P and outright lying about what they are doing (in my opinion which may not be shared by TWTD), poisoning our waterways and having a huge impact on wildlife and nature.

Or we're f**ked. Nationalisation of essential services now. And give them nothing, they've stolen more than enough from the fabric of the nation and the people already. Fk 'em. We mustn't let our country be shafted any longer.

Agreed. I am going to cancel my DD to Anglian water, they can go whistle for their money. I'm fed up with handing over my hard earned to scumbags who make big profits while failing to do the basics of the service they are supposed to be providing.
