Just watching another thing I've found on Brian Clough.... on 20:23 - Oct 1 with 1523 views | woodbridge_blue | Agree with all that Lucan....can you imagine today's players being asked to play 66 games as Russell Osman did in 1980/81. No rotation in those days, managers just picked their first team for every game. Sadly our lack of squad depth cost us on more than one occasion.

And they all got kicked and punched etc etc. Imagine players like Frank Worthington, Stanley Bowles etc playing in todays game with the modern facilities and the modern approach. Trevor Francis? Wow - can you imagine? I completely understand that people will read my next paragraph and think I'm an old tvvat - but....... We used to play from dawn to dusk in the road, we played with the ball all the time, even on the way to school. Everyone had a ball in their hand, always. Even at school when footballs were not allowed in the playground, we played with a tennis ball. [Post edited 1 Oct 2023 20:35]

At the primary school I went to, we had a tarmacked play area (no grass) and no balls allowed (risk of broken windows) so we played football with a pen lid. It was a complete free-for-all!

Today's teams in their current state, would beat the teams on yesteryear in their state at the time - but if the playing field was levelled re everything then that wouldn't be the case. But the top teams are better now than they were then, because their recruitment pool is so much bigger - they are able to bring the best players in the world in opposed to the best players in their country

Just watching another thing I've found on Brian Clough.... on 09:11 - Oct 2 with 1221 views | Radlett_blue | The PL now draws on the best talent from across the world, when in the those days it was the British Isles. So, it's almost certain that the relative skill level of the modern PL player is now much higher. Players are also now much fitter as well.

I also think with the expansion of the game and better coaching around the world, that the talent pool is much deeper now than it ever was. It's interesting to gauge our current squad though against years before. If I blow my own trumpet, I said last season I thought man for man this squad was as good if not better than the squad that last got to the championship play offs. I think it's pretty much comparable now with the last squad that got promoted to the PL.

Just watching another thing I've found on Brian Clough.... on 09:30 - Oct 2 with 1186 views | bluefunk | I remember going to The Baseball Ground back in the day when Clough was manager. Leaving aside the running battles getting back to the station, the most memorable thing was the state of the pitch, which was 80% mud, with 4 patches of grass in the corners. The mud was flat at the start of the game though…

It's a completely different industry now, with countless conditioning coaches, academy training from 7 years old, fitness regimes and data science. Professional footballers now barely drink, I imagine very few of them smoke. They're bigger, fitter, stronger, quicker. It would be a complete mismatch in that respect, but I don't doubt that technically and naturally the footballers of yesteryear were as good as the ones today, but the environments are completely different.
