Suffolk University 11:17 - Oct 9 with 2529 views | le2blue | Learned something I didn't realise at the weekend, apparently Suffolk University is the fastest growing Uni in the UK and currently has 4k students, their aim is to get to a minimum of 10k over the next 5 years. They have the funding lined up to support the growth but the next big challenge for them is providing sufficient teaching space and most importantly accommodation for those students. Could be a real opportunity to further develop the waterfront area, perhaps down towards the old Brewery site...but they're also in discussions with the club and suspect we will see them partnering on the development around Portman Road, perhaps a multi-use event venue. Hopefully the Uni can benefit from the club's momentum, and the two combined can really help further in the rejuvenation of Ipswich as a town.

Trouble is, research pays relatively poorly compared to teaching. They’ll need lots of bums on seats, and ideally overseas ones if they’re going to sustain any growth. Unless funding models change of course (and they need to).

They are working hard to get new courses signed off, for example they have been successful in having a new degree for architects, and this is a particular difficult qualification to get clearance to deliver.

Research in some areas makes money but for most universities, the income generating research nearly covers the cost of the loss making work. UK undergraduate student income breaks even at best. Having said all of that, universities don't exist to make a profit but the current funding model is completely unsustainable,

Another Brexit bonus has been the success of ITFC too.
