On Desert Island Discs recently (think it was the Sept 17th show). Oof, a punch to the gut that was. Very emotional. (And I didn’t realise that Mayall was ‘damaged’ after his quad bike accident)
It's very rare in head injuries that severe that there isn't a degree of functional change, be it very minor(weakened memory, for example) to personality changes to major physical disorders.
The charity Headway are fantastic for support in this field. (Personal experience here - my father in law suffered a severe brain injury following an assault a few years back. He's mostly neurologically intact apart from a tendency towards forgetfulness and struggles to cope with anything stressful).
I think they were working on a new series or stage show for Bottom at the time, but after the accident Rik just couldn't concentrate for more than a few mins at a time to help write the scripts or perform them anymore
And so they had to stop, I think that was when Ade started branching out more into acting as a thing to replace kind of what he felt he had lost with his partnership with Rik.

Headway were recommended to me by the guy in the next bed when I was in hospital recovering from my double subdural hematoma. In the event I never took up his suggestion, perhaps because I could feel my brain rewiring itself and, rightly or wrongly, decided I didn't need much help beyond the weekly blood tests etc. But if i had struggled then I think Headway would have been my first port of call, it helps to have someone from outside regular medicine but who has direct experience of what you are going through.

My Mother in law started Headway after her daughter had a brain aneurysm in early 80’s. Got Princesses Anne involved, it grew from there. Both her and sis in are still with us though she’s no longer involved with Headway. Your in laws’ condition sounds identical to hers, especially getting overwhelmed in every day situations. We’ve actually just moved her into supported living in Emily Bray House on Woodbridge Road.

FiL is looking forward tp his 70th next year and currently living unsupported in Portugal. He apparently also suffered two cardiac arrests in the ambulance as well as his injuries. That he's as sharp as he is is nothing short of miraculous.

I have had two injuries to my head and suffered badly with post concussion in both cases, I can forget stuff and phase out of situations as a result, I have developed behavioural issues akin to ADHD as a result. It is very difficult at times, especially in work.
