FA Cup first round draw 15:08 - Oct 15 with 2940 viewsMiaow

Chesterfield vs Portsmouth should be a good game.

Needham Market will get a trip to Chester if they manage to beat York City in their replay, Braintree Town will play Maidstone United at home if they can get past Chesham United and Chelmsford City will get to visit Bristol Rovers if they knock out Whitby Town.

Some other good ties are Charlton vs Cray Valley Paper Mills (not far for them to travel!), Barnsley vs Horsham, Stockport vs Worksop Town and Billericay Town/Sheppey United vs Walsall.

Bracknell Town, who we beat in the first round last season, will travel to the Abbey Stadium to face Cambridge.

Colchester have an uninspiring trip to Shrewsbury. On the subject of Col U, they managed to lose 5-0 to Forest Green yesterday. FGR had been bottom of League Two and Colchester are now only outside the relegation zone by virtue of having scored one goal more than Forest Green.

Paul Cook derby.

Forest Green are a weird one aren't they. Comfortably promoted season before last, return to that level and are struggling.

I used to watch as Charlton poached player after player from us and were an established Prem side, now they're playing a team called Cray Valley Paper Mills in a competitive game

Nice draw for Horsham, away at Barnsley.

Not sure what what Barnsley will make of receiving their tub of lard though (Stevenage away and Steve Evans seemed most appropriate)

(apologies for the nasty colour scheme)

At the start of the 1996/97 season it was decided to follow Horsham home and away – the printed t-shirts were worn, long coach journeys were broken up by playing spoof and as an introduction to Horsham’s Lardy Boys, a bar of lard was sent to every chairman of forthcoming away matches.

We had an away league match in Hungerford in early October 1996 and Paul Oxley sent his usual bar of lard as a sort of calling card to say we were on our way.

The chairman of Hungerford received the package (nothing aggressive, it was sent in a Tupperware box!) and opened it to find a bar of lard. A simple note saying it was sent by the HFC APF – APF standing for the “Anti Polyunsaturated Faction”.

Unfortunately, the chairman was a rotund gentleman who took the gift as a personal insult which made the thing even more hilarious for us.

I remember he came out of the board room with the lard in his hand asking whether this was from us…we just cracked up. He did complain to our chairman, Frank King who then asked, “who are these Lardy Boys” and that’s how the name stuck.

Due to the complaint, the cost of lard, Tupperware and postage, the sending of Lard stopped apart from the occasional message such as that to Swansea’s chairman for the famous cup game in 2007

And Marc White's post match interview is worth a watch. Tops Paul Cooks efforts at calling out the players,

Seeing the teams involved in the FA Cup and the potential for dreams and heroes to come…. A stark and welcome contrast to the NFL in London games sheeite on my TV right now. Franchises, product, enhance the brand, make even more money on top of the big fooking piles of money clubs have already made. Get in the bin.

Absurd that the 1st & 2nd rounds are no longer regionalised, as they used to be. Sutton v Fylde is a pointless draw - huge travelling distance for impoverished clubs & fans, while Oxford v Maidenhead creates some local interest.

And again, blinking Gamechanger and McKenna have messed up our chances of being involved in this round. We could have had a match to watch this weekend too if it wasn’t for their pesky meddling!

I kind of fancy going to Cambridge away with the Bracknell boys. Great hospitality when we visited last season, top club for non-league - run so well.
