I still wonder with players when 'enough is enough'. Take Jordan Henderson as an example who was on big money at Liverpool as club captain and gave up all his morals to chase the Saudi money. It wasn't as though he needed it because it was 'life changing' when he was already a multi millionaire. I know players are only worth what someone will pay them but you would think they might do things they enjoy as opposed to the 'one better' theory that I make you right with.

They are criticised when supporting morally bankrupt organisations/states. Footballers are also tied directly to institutions that communities are inextricably tied to and like to think represents them, they therefore care more about issues than relate to said clubs [Post edited 17 Jul 2024 14:40]

Pop stars and actors work for morally bankrupt companies but they aren’t subject to the same extent of criticism - but maybe I’m not looking at the right places. Saying all that, most people buy clothes manufactured in poor conditions in poor countries, buy crap from China, buy iPhones and some even go on holiday to Dubai. Most people are complicit of supporting such companies or states even if we don’t wish to acknowledge themselves. [Post edited 17 Jul 2024 14:42]

I suppose pop stars and actors are only as big as their next film, tour or song. I'd imagine most of them (certainly the Elite) will only pick and choose the ones they want to do and think they will have most success with.. The difference with footballers is that they are on multi year conctracts with a gauranteed income and normally huge signing on fees to boot. Wasn't it De Bruyne who is on £400k a week at Citeh and won everything there is to win that was saying recently that the money in Saudi is 'life changing'? Laughable really.

They are, but those discussions are usually seen on film or music forums.

But my axe to grind isnt really with them earning huge amounts of money, or who is paying it, rather than why wouldn't they want to play at a high level, or try and win trophies or somewhere they enjoy instead of earning an extra £100k a week which just adds to the millions they already have. Also, quite a lot of actors payments depend on the box office success of the film, where as footballers if you exclude bonus's get a crazy amount of money per second, regardless of the performance of the team overall. Ronaldo for example could get that pay today and everyday whilst his side got relegated.

But if, over a course of a season, a footballer loses form or suffers a bad injury then his value slides down quite considerably.

Yeah, that is a valid point. I get it is a short career span so if you have a player in the champ, they are likely to chase it as its then life changing. The likes of Benzema, Ronaldo, Kante etc though have earned considerable enough to cover that situation. There are kids fresh out of academies earning five figure sums per week now which is insane really.

It's not even just about the academy players. There are some players in non league earning £1000 a week, non league!

When you look at de Bruyne's comments, there is very little hope.
