I have been surprised by how many non-French people have been involved in the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies. Lots of famous US people keep popping up! Doesn't France have any?
I am pretty sure London 2012 was littered with the good and the great of British culture, maybe I am remembering through rose-tinted glasses. |  |

Maybe but i always thought the Olympic games was partly about showcasing your country to the world and giving your culture a chance to shine.
I didn't see too many celebrities from anywhere else apart from the USA. Tom Cruise rocking up at the end kind of highlighted it for me.
They have some fantastic people, some incredible talents, just seemed a shame to go for big names. Especially more so considering it was a Frenchman who founded the modern Olympic movement.
Anyway, I agree fantastic games. Always love the Olympics, it's a few weeks of just joy (and heartache). Watching sports I don't have much time normally to watch | |

I think you’re approaching this from the wrong end of the jingoistic stick. It was a Frenchman who kickstarted the Olympics (and the football World Cup). They always intended to promote it as a global festival of sport - and used iconic settings for events
Most Olympic Sports are entirely alien to the local population of the host country -but the French seem to have made a real fist of staging an excellent event. Even the trains and underground ran on time so people could get to and from events
It probably helped that this minority sports fest was in August when most Parisians up sticks and leave for a month,,,, but I doubt France will be gifting West Ham a stadium and the local communities will be donning their yellow jackets if there isn’t a massive benefit of affordable housing in Paris now all those strange sports have drifted back into obscurity for 3 years and 49 weeks. | |
