Bastards. Stood on a nest today at work. Seven stings, one of which was an inch from my left gonad after it went up my shorts. Must take more care in future. Bastards.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Reading the title and the first word of the post I wondered what a rugby club could have done to offend you.

Hope your stings were/are not too painful.

Did your wife ask the doc to get rid of your pain but keep the swelling?

Urgh. Horrible critters. I had one fly down the neckline of my dress and sting me on the boobs three times. It was deeply unpleasant. I suspect the left gonad will complain deeply for a few days. You have my deepest sympathy.

This time of year is typical of bad behaviour by wasps, they are basically drunk on fermented sugar and like moody teenagers.

Having said that, there is a remarkable decline in numbers this summer, so you must be pretty unlucky. Please stay away from ITFC fixtures this season. Ta.

I'm worried that I've seen so few jaspers this year, so I slightly rejoice at the news of your misfortune! Sorry.

Usually they're crawling all over my plums by now too.

I did read that wasps are ‘accidental pollinators’ which, if I were to ever write a really pretentious novel would be the name of it. ‘The Accidental Pollinator’ sounds like high brow erotica set within 1920s aristocracy. And I like it.

This is very true and they are late nesting this year so I’ve been a bit complacent. Found another nest an hour or so later while cutting the grass but got out of the way in time. Trust me, they are certainly back with a vengeance now.

Accidental Pollinators?

I saw them when they supported Throbbing Gristle at the Roundhouse.

Throbbing Gristle would have been slightly further to the right.

About 10 years ago I disturbed a nest in my open compost heap, and got quite a few bites on my legs and arms as I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

The things that bit me didn't seem to me to be as big as wasps although they were quite vicious, so I just carried on working in the garden, only to find my arms and legs swelling up about half an hour later.

In the end, my wife ended up calling out an ambulance who carted me off to hospital as I was too squeamish to accept the injection they offered me in the house.

I suffered an anaphylactic shock, something I have never experienced before or since, but I put some of my problems down to carrying on working after the stings.

I resolved then never to do serious gardening in shorts (eg, cutting back brambles and the like), but I must admit I don't always keep to this.

…it’ll just end up being about politics, with them all calling each other racists?

Can wasps be racist?

Are they prejudice against bees?

Do they want all the horseflies to go back to where they came from?

Bet the old Asian hornets get a lot of grief.
