My post-mortem of our first match.

a) Well done Liverpool you negotiated a genuine banana skin yesterday

There appeared to be clear consternation and frustration on their players' faces as they went off at half time. They came out a different team in the 2nd half, they remained calm and when they finally got the space they needed to show their class on the hour mark the match was only really going to go one way. Their reaction to the goal showed more relief than anything else.

b) Team selection

Thanks Kieran for fielding the team you did. It was a huge mark of respect to the players who have elevated us from being the 60th best team in the country to one of the top 20 and a pleasure for us fans to show our appreciation of our boys. My greatest fears: Walton and Woolfy exceeded all my expectations. I felt sorry that Burgess wasn't among the starting 11.

c) New Signings

Greaves is an absolute sensation. I expect Phillips and Cajuste will soon settle in and add to the physical presence we are lacking down the spine of the team. I have my reservations about SS but suspect Kieran has a role for Sammie different to that which he played at Blackburn but what that is exactly will become clearer as the season progresses I'm sure,

d) Time added on

It was fantastic to see all the players still pressing in the 4 or 5 minutes of added on time. They were never going to turn the game round but it was critical for us fans as we cannot allow ourselves to fall in line with every pundit's expectations that we are a plucky side who are facing the inevitable fate of a newly promoted side.

Like last year we will nick crucial goals and points in the dying minutes of the match and they will be the difference between our genuine hopes and others' expectations of us.

Don 't think there's anything really controversial there!

Poll: How many points do you think you'll need to get a ticket for Norwich?

A well considered post mate.

No mention of "the knee", half and half scarfs or our skipper being found out.

Just focussed on the football.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

I felt a bit uncomfortable congratulating Liverpool. As a 10-year old in the late 70's I was a regular subscriber to Shoot magazine. I stopped buying it when there were 10 mentions of Liverpool to every Ipswich one.

I see footy as an escape from life's problems rather than a vehicle for complicating it more.

As a football fan there is never anything wrong in recognising class when you see it.
Their first goal was a thing of beauty.

I give credit where it's due in just about every aspect of my life but I have a problem with singing "We're the finest football team the world has ever seen" one minute and then lauding a great goal from a team I was programmed from my formative years to view as a significant rival.

There's a certain tribalism that comes with being a fan of a single team (rather than football in general) which when dissected is ridiculous, but it's primordial in me, it's rooted in passion rather than logic and makes football the intoxicating bag of anomalies and inconsistencies that it is.

I think that's all fair.

The players put in a huge effort in that first half, and eventually, the energy level dropped slightly, as would be expected. With some better execution in a couple of occasions we could have been in a position to have a great chance of scoring.

The other point from me was Delap. Probably because I've not seen that much of him, but not only his running but ball control was far better than I thought- going to cause a lot of problems for teams this season

All spot on, nothing controversial.

Well maybe the SS bit, he’s got to start in place of chappers imo.

RIP Sir Bobby

Hmm you have deceived us with your title a little Chorley. My only adjustment to the framing of point b) would be, as well as these warm and welcome sentiments, McKenna genuinely played the best XI available to him. Tuanzebe was my surprise starter once Muric's injury became known, given Szmodics and Phillips have yet to train with us. After seeing his and Johnson's performances though, I can understand why Axel received the nod for Liverpool. We didn't see Burgess as Greaves looks a special talent. I suspect it would have been the same for others if we had pre-season-prepared Greaveses in their positions.

Indeed. The pace of Diaz and the guile of Salah and Jota were a tad frightening in the second half.
Seeing them play in the flesh instead of TV made me realise how bloody good they were.
Saying that, we gave a decent account of ourselves in the first half and at times after we went 2-0 down so have some optimism that we will be ok.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I think Sxmodics has the hint of Marcus Stewart about him.

Both natural finishers and both finish quite cooly looking to chip and place the ball home. Both have good movement to find space.

Szmodics has a bit more pace as well.

Poll: best attacking central midfielder?

The OP started life intending just to say "well done, Liverpool" and I was feeling a bit dirty leaving it at that. Then I got carried away and admittedly added a bunch of stuff which was not really controversial at all. I'm looking forward to seeing how Kieran develops Szmodics because at the moment, apart from him being a fairly nice bloke who has earned his way to the Premier League, I see an ageing Championship player who we have paid handsomely for.
