I think we can all agree the squad needed significant investment and help to put up a good fight this season and they’ve come through with the signings so far - Clarke to finish it off.

The question is, are we well within the PSR/FFP rules set within the Premier League?

Obviously Forrest and Everton are different cases due to the sheer numbers of players they brought in over the years and the consistent big fees, but does anyone have any knowledge on our current position with FFP/PSR?

Mark Ashton does.

It depends on what part of each fee is paid up front and how the balance is spread over the period of the contract, see the comments from Darragh MacAnthony about Szmodics.

The loan deals for Broja and Cajuste will be similarly balanced, so that we are within it next year too I’m sure.

After Clarke, we are clearly still looking for a right sided centre back and that’s probably it, unless we get an injury on Saturday that changes things

It's impossible for us to actually know at this stage. Last season's accounts aren't even released yet but:

22/23 FFP loss - £12.4m

23/24 - I would speculate the FFP loss will broadly be in the same region. Would expect revenues to be up circa £8m-£10m in the Championship, improved shirt sales etc. Obviously a corresponding increase in costs (mainly player wages) but we didn't go mad with transfer fees. So I would assume a loss broadly in the same region as 22/23.

So, £25m over those two seasons. We are allowed to lose £61m on a rolling basis to the end of this season (2 x £13m for Championship and £35m for one PL season). That leaves us able to make an FFP loss this year of circa £36m.

In terms of amortisation/loan fees hitting the P&L for this year on new signings, I make it:

Delap - £3m (based on £15m initial fee, 5 years)
Hutchinson - £3.6m (based on £18m initial fee, 5 years)
Greaves - £3m (based on £15m inital fee, 5 years)
Townsend - £250k (based on £500k initial fee, 2 years)
Szmodics - £2.25m (based on £9m initial fee, 4 years)
Muric - £2m (based on £8m initial fee, 4 years)
Phillips - £7m loan fee (saw this reported somewhere)
Broja - £5m loan fee (reported covering his wages of £100k p/w)
Cajuste - £1.3m loan fee (as reported)

I make that £27.4m. Obviously for the permanent signings you will have wages/signing on fees on top of that. Amortisation for those already on our books will be pretty negligible but obviously they all have had pay rises.

However, revenue will be up well over £100m this season.

In short, we've been very transparent about our FFP position under the new ownership and they will be totally on top of it I am sure.

I guess we'll find out over the coming years in the prem, we might find ourselves in a Forrest situation in 3 or 4 seasons.
But I don't think Ashton will let that happen

Considering we've only spent approx £27 Mill on fee's this accounts year so far, i'd imagine we're absolutely fine.

Depending on how the seasons go, we could have 3 players who easily could fetch £50-60 Mill fees based on some transfers fees this summer

Davis, Hutchinson, Greaves

Then you have the potential of Cajust, Broja, Clarke if we buy him.

I'd say there's about a 0.2% chance that the CEO or ownership group get us into trouble.

They know what they are doing. They'll have a plan for us winning the league, finishing in europe. surviving and going down that will include best and worst case scenarios, player sales, how contracts are structured.

I don't think for one minute they would take any risks they hadn't fully prepared for and had solutions to.

We will also have spent a fair amount in agents fees.

Don't forget that the PSR rules change in 25/26. I think that MA is smart enough to spend within the guidelines, and with the new rules having two elements of Squad Cost Rules (SCR) which is similar to today but a new element of Top to Bottom Anchoring, which is "supposed" to help the lower revenue and performing clubs. The new system is being run in a kind of monitoring mode alongside the current system through 2024/25 - the aim is to bring the EPL more in line with UEFA rules in the long term.

What does it all mean - to be honest, without truly knowing the clubs P&L and the terms agreed with player purchases/sales and salaries it is impossible to say, however the general view is that the teams with the more balanced/lower overall wage bills could potentially benefit more than those with higher revenue/higher wage bills - Newcastle Utd being a good example.

What I will say is that the next 2 years are going to be very interesting both on and off the field for us . . .

Greaves has the potential to fund his transfer, plus Hutchison and Szmodics

Can see Man Utd in the market for a Maguire replacement next summer with their new manager. Hoping its not a case of the new MU manager buying a player he has just worked with.

What we are not doing is buying Chris Wood for £15 million which pleases me.

Supporting Town is like this:
Ashton and McKenna have proved, to take the expression from the song, that they know exactly what we need.
Ashton and the board, with all the great work they have done to the team, the training ground, the stadium, securing extra investment after buying us when we were floundering in the middle of league 1, have proven they know exactly what they are doing as well.
I know it seems too good to be true, i know you think you might be dreaming and will wake up and Paul Hurst is still our manager, I know you think its too perfect and something is going to go wrong.
It won't, you aren't dreaming, this is happening and just as we completely trust McKenna the board have also earnt the right for us to completely trust them.
You know when we had Sir Bobby and the Cobbolds and it was the perfect marriage, or when Arsene Wenger and David Dein had the same at Arsenal, or Fergie and Martin Edwards at Man U, well now we have KM and MA ( and the board ) and as Ed Sheeran might sing, its perfect. Football goes in cycles, we have seen a lot of crap and a stagnating, declining club since Jim Magilton went. It is hard to believe where we are now, but we are, stop worrying, just enjoy it. It really is OUR TIME my friend.
