Is this mostly now about McKenna's coaching? 06:47 - Sep 1 with 2360 viewsfranz_tyson

Got our squad now and it's virtually a new team. And one with limited PL experience.

I think we've hoovered up mostly top-end Championship players who are hopefully on an upward curve, although you don't know truly what level they can achieve. So there is that uncertainty.

Think it's up to Kieran and his coaching staff now and what they can achieve on the training pitch. If we can try and keep that group togetherness and pass it on the new players then we stand a good chance, but I think coaching is now the key.

Driving home after the match we were saying that we have some bloody good footballers at this club now, you could tell that yesterday, When Kieran gets them all up to speed and playing his type of football, I think we will be excellent.
What he has done on the training pitch in just a few hours is immense already

Not quite a new team, Davis, Woolfenden, Tuanzebe and Morsy played the full ninety (seven) minutes, Omari may be our record signing but he has been here a year, Chaplin had a little cameo as did Al Hamidi who has been with us for more than half a season now.

Errr, yes, that’s why we opted to pay him £3m+ per year. Its always been about how McKenna and his team can get the most out of his squad

Kieran has improved every player at this club, including those already here. I am sure he has identified these players as those who he can coach and also improve technically and maturity wise on the pitch. We are in very, very safe hands.

Watching the game yesterday I thought we had one main weakness, but from McKenna's post match interview he's already aware of it so will no doubt be working to fix that in the coming weeks:

"we know our execution to create clear-cut chances needs to improve at this level. We got into some really good positions that should be resulting in probably the creation of a good chance but we didn’t even to manage to get a shot off in those situations."

Wasn't so noticeable in the Liverpool / Man City games with the restricted chances we had, but more so against Wimbledon / Fulham. Lots of examples of players making a pass expected a run from the player in front, or front players making a run and not getting a pass. Once we build those understandings around the pitch, we'll be in a better place.

As you say, it's pretty clear we've brought some good players to the club; even last season we played a number of teams who had better players than ours (we've pinched a few now!) but there is obviously going to be more of that this time around; we succeeded last year by being a better team / squad, so that will be the aim again.

The coaching yes and a continuation of the bonding which is already very apparent with the new players too.

It's been clearly stated that character and personality are major priorities, nay requirements, in our recruitment. That comes across strongly in most if not all of the new player interviews we see. What is also very apparent already is how those new players are actively involved in promoting a really powerful togetherness in the squad. The individual hugs and encouragement we do between all the players before the game is a really important thing, as is the huddle.

We have a team spirit second to none, and I'm SO pleased and slightly relieved to see that that looks to be very rapidly absorbing all the new lads. I'm guessing we do a lot of strong psychological stuff as an important part of our training and I think it's been paying dividends pretty much since KMc took over. It's our superpower.

It's also the simple pass, Hutchinson to Ogbene just before we scored, simple pass to his right and Ogbene is in on goal.
Although conversely a few around me were saying they were screaming at Delap to pass it just as he thumped it into the goal.

But re the Hutch one, really need to pass in that situation, especially as chances can be few in the prem. In the Championship you get more chances, but players will learn.

We also need to make sure we work the GK. Clarke did a lovely cut in and then sent his shot flying over the ball. I could see what he was trying to do but he had he created space for himself, in the Prem you must make the GK work in that situation. When it's on target, even if a weak shot, the GK has to stop it, might even drop it.

Small points but in the Prem it's the difference between success and failure. But the positive is were getting ourselves into those situations, it's currently just the execution of the final decision.

Yes, this is why the contract we offered McKenna is one of the best investments the club has ever made. He’s already taken some of the players he inherited from being very low value championship players (Morsy, Wolfie, Chaplin etc)to premier league players. He’s now working with £15million players and the expectation is that he’ll turn them into £30-40million players. If Delap scores 10 goals this season, Hutchinson carries on his form, Greaves keeps playing as he has been, Clarke gets plenty of assists, then the value he’s increased the squad by dwarfs what we’re paying him. Even if the worst happens, we’d hopefully be in a position where we’d only need to sell one or two to balance the books and the rest of the squad could get us promoted again

What’s really exciting is McKenna made League One players look like Championship players and some of them now look like Premier League players.

Given that McKenna has worked with top Premier League players and world class players you’d hope he’s got the skills to make this team look like very good Premier League players which would bode incredibly well for us in the short and long term.

It’s not like he’s now at his ceiling. He knows what you need to be a top 2-4 club at this level so he will be able to push some of the current squad on a level or even two.
