Lots to take a look at 18:03 - Oct 19 with 950 viewsitfcsuth

Biggest concern being our approach to sit off teams a bit more - so unusual and unlike us, we’re built on being ultra aggressive presser/counter-pressers, and thought that would be the biggest tool we’d use this year to bridge the gap in quality.

Attacking threat looks a real problem. Clarke looks a long way off the PL, Hutch operating in a position he looks ineffective, and Szmodics/Ogbene struggling for minutes and consistency. As Ashton said, if you get it wrong, you’ve got a big problem.

Final 20 we looked so much better when we stepped up our intensity on and off the ball, and all whilst largely having the ‘old guard’ on the pitch who have been engrained in the way we play.

We looked better kn the last 20 largely because Everton were happy to sit back and absorb our fairly ineffective pressure.

Hutch definitely looked better in that last 20 when he was shifted out wide, even then though, even when we looked much better after the subs we barely laid a glove on them. Agree about sitting off, our pressing looked half-arsed today, not sure if that was instruction from KMcK or it the players were just not doing it. Phillips looked a bit anonymous to me, have been a little disappointed with his impact so far.

And, of course, once again, we gifted them their first goal.

For all that we weren't at the races , we weren't overwhelmed today, cut out the calmitous errors in defence and we might make a fight of it.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

Think we need to look at those still here to help us get that back.
If you look back, you will see that I was calling for just a few signings and those who got us here, to have the chance to keep us here. Not having a pop at those who have come in, just hope those still here are given more minutes.

A lot could be made of the last 20 with a 'Championship' team and looking half decent, rightly or wrongly.

IMO it would be putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 to discuss it too much, because the game was more or less done, we weren't threatening the goal, and they were happy to let us have the ball.

But there's an argument for getting the band back together to an extent, even just to build a bit of confidence. Burns looked absolutely done not long into the second half, and I don't know whether than was physically or mentally. He didn't look happy after the game either.

It's only just occured to me that Broadhead didn't get on the pitch, which is disappointing. Arguably our best league one player bar Morsy and Davis (always a caveat) and joint top scorer in the Champ. Real shame he hasn't kicked a ball yet.

I can only think Broadhead was there as a placeholder, and not really fit enough to contribute.

Agreed, but we also stepped on our intensity, won a lot more second balls, and our counter pressing and ball recovery was far better.

At times we’ve looked in fear of applying our ultra pressing play, when imo it’s the only way we will bridge the gap in individual quality.

Sit off the opposition at this level and they will pick you apart.

I agree that you could read too much into that last 20. However if we're looking as out of sync and lethargic as we are at the moment (appreciate that it takes time to gel). I think there might be argument to look towards the old guard for more cohesion with a few obvious integrations (Greaves, Delap). As it usually takes players a little while to get to grips with what McKenna wants, let alone a whole team. With the added benefit of the good will and backing of the crowd, and if we're going to be losing anyway why not with those that have earned us the right to be here.
